toyota avalon?

I went car looking today. They had some used ones that were well inside my price range that I thought I would check and see if anyone here has any experiance with them. My criteria were: needs at least a V6 engine, used, needs to be large enough to fit a 6'2" person with freekishly large shoes, and cannot under any circumstances be a Ford.

Two of them in particular were a very nice 96 lincoln town car. Pretty much a pristine interior, V8 engine, unfortunatly 90000 miles, but it would be only $6,000 before haggling with a 40k mile warrenty. Both my parents and myself are looking at buying a car at the same time, so with that in mind, they would probably knock another $1,000 off of that for my end. it's a reeely nice car ont he inside at least. full loather, power everything, no scratches or dings, very clear windshield. The engine bay was nice and clean, they detailed it and everything, but I know where to look for oil leaks and heat warpage, and I didn't see anything there.

So that's possibility number 1. It would be about half my theoretical maximum price, with the understanding that I just want to buy the thing outright and not have a car payment.

The other possibility I looked at was a toyota Avalon. About the same miles, not quite as good a condition as the lincoln, but toyota also has a reputation I know. A little higher in the overall price range, still about twice as many miles as I really want to consider, but also a little newer model. A 2000 I think

My existing POS 92 olds is going to net me about $100.00 in trade in. yay.

They may have some lower milage ones in tomorrow, and i'll probably check out other dealerships, but I was just wondering if anyone had any experiance with either of those?

That really isnt that bad as far as mileage/price is concerned. But christ talking about cars makes me realize how fast time goes by >< Hard to believe a 96 is ten years old....

Are you feeling generous? I have a 86 BMW 325e with a scorched hood I would trade for your olds :P Im sure its better than both of my vehicles combined.

Based on your criterion, I suggest a Green 1979 Ford Pinto. That should be perfect!

I think if I was putting a used Toyota against a Lincoln, I'd look into the cost of repairs if necessary. I'm guessing the Toyota is actually the cheaper of the two to service. It's probably cheaper on gas too.

I drove a 96 Avalon as a loaner for a couple weeks and was damn impressed with it.

I'd be tempted to bounce the question off a good mechanic. At the time, I recall the ones I knew being fond of Subarus and Toyotas in general as solid dependable cars.

Ha! or a Festiva! We all know how complimentary they are to a 6'2" frame.

But when in doubt... Go Geo Metro.........................

Buy the Avalon, no where near close. Town Car's are absolute junk. Really. Not to mention Lincon = Ford....

The Avalon is the poor man's Lexus. The Lincon is the poor mans Crown Victoria. Since you're a poor man, go with the Lexus.

good luck with it either way.

I'd be probably leaning more towards the Toyota. I live in Australia and they seem to be a common car which means cheap on parts and repairs. I've heard they're pretty reliable and good on fuel too.
However we dont have any Lincolns here so I dont know anything about them.

Smash covered it. Lincoln=Ford. Toyota all the way unless you can find a nice V6 Accord within your budget.

EDIT:Because u and i are right next to each other.

Buy the Toyota. They aren't on their way to being the world's largest auto maker for nothing.

But...if you buy Toyota you'll be indirectly supporting Asian gil farmers!!

I'd go with the Lincoln over the Toyota, personally, as I prefer American cars. But I'd shooot myself in the face before buying a Ford.

The Toyota will have many more miles left in it than the Lincoln, and will be cheaper to repair, assuming there isn't some major problem with it. You can use carfax to see if it's been in an accident. I also always tell someone considering a used car to ask to take it for a test drive, and drive it straight to a mechanic for an inspection (obviously, a mechanic not used by the dealership). You can usually ask ahead of time if they'll charge you to look over your vehicle quickly for you as you're considering buying one.

Also, if it's possible to get a used vehicle with at least a 30 day warranty, take it in for a very thorough inspection just after you buy it, and make them replace even minor parts that need it.

Lincoln's usually last quite a while, i own a 97 towncar i bought on ebay for 5grand, i've had no problems with it and it was a southern car.

But now a days, you need to watch out where you buy these cars, some people like repairing the cars involved in the hurricanes and scam people.

but from what experince i've had with lincoln's, as long as you dont beat em up a lot(You know what i mean), they are very nice cars that can last a pretty long time.

Toyotas do indeed tend to be cheaper to run, in my experience. I love my VW to death, but my fiancee's toyota is dirt cheap to take care of, compared to it.

Why? Foreign I4's are incredibly powerful and reliable for the displacement and the gas mileage is much better. I don't know what cars you've seen that could be reliable options that you've passed up for not being V6.

That aside, I think I'd go with the Avalon. You can do a good bit of internal cleaning and stuff on your own, but recuring mechanical problems can drag you down. Good money after bad and all that.

Edit: past != passed

YOu may also try going to Kelly Blue Book website and checking retail on that Toyota. You may have some haggle room on that. I have bought my last two cars used, through Car Max. If you have any in your area, I recommend them highly. I have never had an issue with them and their prices are fair. I find that regular car dealerships tend to price their used cars higher than Kelly Blue Book suggested retail. I'd go with the Avalon too. Better gas mileage and Lincoln would be a gas hog. Not to mention that Toyota's can pretty much be driven down to the rims. It's not uncommon to see Toyota's with over 200k miles on them and still driving. If you can get the VIN Car Fax is a good idea as well.

Good luck with your search.

I can agree with this one, my fiancee's Toyota Accord can actually book it reasonably well with only a V4, plus it gets better mileage on cheaper gas than my much smaller Beetle.

if you want a car that gets more MPG (Miles per gallon), i'd go with the toyota.

if you want a more comfy ride and justin general more comfort, go for the lincoln.

I Think, as long as no problems with either engine wise, the lincoln will last a few years longer then toyota just due to how it's made. also depends on how you drive it..im a speed demon, I admit it, so mine won't last as long as usual.

I wanted to go with the V6 because I'm used to it. My existing 92 POS has a very well maintained 3.2L V.6, which before the transmission went mostly out, I credit with saving me from at least two rear end accidents. I'm used to it by now, and the V4's I test drove all seemed mushy and unresponsive by comparison.

For me personally, gas milage is less of a concern than it might be for some. My daily commute is under a mile, and I walk when it isn't too cold or rainy, and for work since we're a state agency I just grab a state car if I need to go somewhere. That just leaves errands, and vacations really. Plus with the rising gas prices, the really fuel efficient cars are going up in price and the gas guzzlers are falling quite rapidly.

Go with the Toyota. It will save money and will still be running long after the lincoln has been recycled.

I know its amazing what they do with V4's/I4's now, but some older cars are mushy with them. Having a manual helps but an 80hp Nissan Sentra is going to be mushy no matter what. My co-workers drive Civic Si's and Acura Integras and the like, so I'm biased towards what I've seen those little four-bangers do.

I've driven a 94 olds cutlass supreme with the V6 3.1 @ 160hp. It has been fairly nice, but the engine isn't as peppy as it was 4 years ago when I got it. The car itself is so heavy that it hampers the power of the engine somewhat.

If you can find a nice foreign car, with 2/3 the weight and the same amount of power, I think you'd not find it too problematic. Of course, you are 6'2"... and I'm only 5'5" so those smaller cars that I enjoy would not work as well for you.

Still, toyota.

I love my 88 BMW 325. It's the last year that BMW actually did just the stock 325 without the add-ons and a few collectors have offered to buy mine just for that fact. It runs well, strong engine, but there were some repairs to it when my husband first bought it for me because the previous owner SWORE he could make it into the Fast and the Furious.

Edit: Forgot to say, go with the Toyota. Called one of my clients who's a mechanic and he recommended that you go with the Toyota.

Buy a motorcycle and be done with it all! You won't have to worry about fuel economy, leg-space or mushy-power. You even get to wear a cool leather jacket too!
