You might as well take 15k or more a year out of your pay and figure that's going to getting there and back home again.

The SO and I have radically different commutes and still go through about a tank a week each, so it's not even so much that. It's the time I would spend having breakfast or watching the news, or working out before dinner at night.

I've done it before. I had the same commute for a job in the city for three years, and in the end, I left for a place that was much closer. I'll do the same again, but I'd like to bear this one out if I can, because it's good experience and there's more than just my selfishness going on here. In my line of work, you have to go where the population and the funding intersect, and it sure isn't 15 min from my house. Smiley: frown

Oh I agree. The extra time you could relax or whatever rather than being in a car is more important than money. But when you factor that along with the monetary aspect, it really puts things in perspective.

Yeah, that's always something to get around. The reason I commuted for so long wasn't because I wanted a bigger paycheck, it was simply because I couldn't find a job in my field in the local area for so long. Eventually some friends were able to get me in with their company. Just in time too, I was seriously considering moving to a different state.

We have B1's and C130's though.... loud! So loud it rattles the windows and we live across town from the base.

Grew up with F-16's but here its C-17's and commercial traffic as well. CHS is a combined Airport/Mobile Air Command.

some crap about books on tape/cd

If you have an iPod and you're into .torrents... and you don't mind a little unethical behavior then you might want to look into www.demonoid.com. Otherwise try www.audible.com. I've gone through tons of audiobooks to/from work. I cannot stand to be in a car, much less drive.

I lovingly refer to my 100 mile a day commute as "the Trail of Tears".

Soon I'm gonna get some language CDs to listen to during the drive. I prolly could learn 2 new languages a year.

Just show how dumb folks fron Dundalk are. Sure housing is cheaper in Parkville, then in Silver Springs, but there are some nice just as affordable down here in SW Baltimore.

I know better then to say anything about Parkville as Jonwin grew up there and my oldest lives in the 34 zip code not that far away. Dundalk is always fair game though.

The Trail of Tears
It's so funny yet true. I've driven those roads, nothing says fun like gridlock on the beltway.

I used to have 40-50 minute commutes through Westchester county for my last job. Unless I was stupid enough to take the Taconic before 10am, which is a real mistake, becaue the exit ramp between the Taconic and I-287 is perpetually under construction. It's one of those deals where the traffic stops under the "EXIT 1/2 MI" sign, then it takes you over an hour to make that last half mile. But the traffic is just bullsh[black][/black]it. The closer you get to the city the worse it gets. Southern Westchester is almost all city like Southern Cali is.

It's been a real pleasant shock moving all the way up here though. This town has a population of about 1600; nothing is open after midnight, including the one gas station/convenience store. The house is right on the "highway" that goes through town; right at the speed change, too. 55 -> 35 so it always sounds like cars are slowing down to pull into our place. But I like it; I'm so used to the background noise of highway traffic that I'd miss not having a road so close.
