So this morning I realized that I spend approximately three hours out of my day commuting, and that, due to traffic, I may have to up that another 30 minutes since I keep running into sunshine/rain/accident/rally delays. I am satisfied with my current job, and I just moved here for it, but damn if I'm not thinking about looking for something closer to home.

Maybe it's just a slow work day.

I live in a smaller town (250,000 people) and I can't imagine having to drive that long to get to my job. Sometimes it pays to live in the middle of no-where.

I couldn't handle living in a sparsely populated area. I'd shoot myself.

To each their own Smiley: lol

I suppose one could argue that it's quite boring here but I manage to keep myself occupied. For our honeymoon we went to London which was the largest city I had ever been in (been to Southern California but that doesn't really count, the entire state is like a massive city). Quite the shock, beautiful city but I was glad to get home.

I forget what exactly you do, but is working from home, even one or two days a week an option? It would save you a little money/time...

I'd go postal if I didn't have a nice thick tree line and river between me and my neighbors.

People suck..

I lovingly refer to my 100 mile a day commute as "the Trail of Tears".

Soon I'm gonna get some language CDs to listen to during the drive. I prolly could learn 2 new languages a year.

Our next home will be built on a decent amount of land away from cities and people I want to be able to run around my home naked and not worry if the neighbors or mail lady might see me. I dont want to hear horns and ambulances all day and all nite. We live about 12 blocks from the largest hospital of our city and between the ambulances, fire trucks and police cars going up and down our street all the time I'm soo ready for the quiet of a stream and the sound of trees and birds.

I used to live 10 miles from work. Most days it took me about 45 minutes to get to work, and about 1hr30minutes to get home. All that to go ten miles. Thats without any unusual accidents and the like.

Now I live 15 miles away and it takes me about 20 minutes unless somthing unusual happens, or I leave the office at a bad time.

I changed the route to work drastically between the two locations and it has made all the difference.

I live off of a major road, near a small hospital, and an Ambulance station. My house is also fairly centered on the glide slope for Charleston International (CHS). I think that I would miss the noise if it wasn't there. I grew up in the shadow of Shaw AFB and the noise of planes overhead reminds me of home, a bit. The college environment was also really noisy for me. I think I'd feel a bit off if the noise wasn't there.

Mr. Katie is here at Dyess AFB. So I know what you mean by the noise. We have B1's and C130's though.... loud! So loud it rattles the windows and we live across town from the base.

Heh, funny, small is 250,000 people?

I live in a small southern college town. Maybe 10,000 residents, and 15,000 college students. I am sure more live in the county than 10,000, but I am not sure what the number is. It takes me 10 minutes to get anywhere, maybe 15 in heavy traffic. It only really gets crazy on football weekends when 70,000 people decend on the town to tailgate and drink large amounts of beer.

Nah. I manage a department and my boss is a workaholic, so I try to focus on the fact that 99% of my staff loves me, my boss told me recently that hiring me is the best thing she ever did, and my home life is wonderfully satisfying. Add to that the fact that I made myself into a sort of dispatcher in order to relieve some of the staff's workload and shorten provider wait times, and there isn't much I can do from home.

Some days I try to leave earlier (1/2 an hour cuts my commute almost in half), but my boss freaks out and so she tends to do cute things like calling me at 4:50 to see if I am still here, or setting up 3 pm meetings that go until 5:20.

It's a supervisor position, so the work-related crap comes with the job, but I'm hoping that I can stomach the commute long enough to not have it look like I just up and walked away on the 'ol resume.

Like I said, just bored.

have you tried books on cd? The Mr.'s commute is 60 minutes without traffic and 90 with. He joined a cd book club and it's helped the boredome tremendously. Plus he now has time to read those books hes been meaning to over the years.

Or you could just move to NC with me and Tare

I moved from San Diego to a smaller town Lemoore (Nephy here would know what I'm talking about). Husband, kids and I are so used to a big city with lots to do, people to see, places to go that we've been going crazy for the last 9 years because there isn't much to do, no one to see and nowhere to go, unless you're willing to drive. And roadtrips with 3 kids is not a weekly option.

I like the fact that my commute only takes 15 minutes or so. We're hoping that we can find a smaller town in Southern California to move to when husband retires from the military. I've been looking at the Hemet area and thought that would be a great area (husband wants mountains and Hemet is close enough to those as well as my family in San Diego). Even with the Scientologists.

Now that's an idea. I'm not sure I could keep a straight face when the love scenes come up.Smiley: laugh

I also like the idea of learning Italian, but all the CDs are so expensive. I've heard good things about Rosetta Stone, but I think I need a computer for that.

Funny you should mention that. I had a very interesting talk with my SO's sister and mother the other day. Sis is looking for a job to Carey,NC so she can buy a Martha home, and Mom says she has always wanted to retire there.

I'm just biding my time. Smiley: wink2

I commuted for 3 years for about 3 hours a day in drive time. After a while, it gets really old. I tried moving closer, but didn't care for living in the big city so I moved back. Eventually I got so sick of the drive I started calling in sick just to avoid it. Then I finally found a job 15 minutes away.

Commuting just isn't worth it. Especially when you figure in the cost of your time, wear and tear on your vehicle, gas, etc. You might as well take 15k or more a year out of your pay and figure that's going to getting there and back home again.
