WoW FuneralFollow

I apologize if this has been posted before. But when I saw this I instantly thought of the Asylum.

http://www.sploid.com/news/2006/04/slaughter_at_th.php

Quote:
For reasons yet to be explained, a group of players decided to hold a "funeral service" for another player who reportedly died in real life on February 28 ... and they decided to hold it in an open-combat area.

They announced it on a World of Warcraft message board.

A gang of rival players known as "Serenity Now" thought that was a fine way to slaughter a whole lot of enemies with minimal effort.

In a hilarious video that even makes sense to those who have never entered this "Lord of the Rings"-style world of wizards and elves and dragons, the Serenity Now gang raids the solemn lakeside funeral and slaughters dozens and dozens of dimwitted mourners.

But first, an "advance man" goes to the memorial service to check things out. When his marauding horde is just about to reach the funeral, he brutally kills the character representing the girl who reportedly died in real life.

Then the gang makes quick work of all the mourners. Finally, the advance man returns to the virtual corpse of the supposed real-world dead girl. He genuflects and says she liked fishing and snow and playing the combat style of World of Warcraft.

The raid has led to much hand-wringing about player ethics, with many people apparently shocked that a game about wizards killing each other would be used for exactly that purpose.

The funeral raid happened on March 4, and just three days later the brutal video appeared on Google, apparently as a "recruitment video" for the Serenity Now gang.

Even those who found the raid distasteful say it was idiotic for the "funeral' to be held in an open combat zone.

Here's the video.

Edit* There is a soundtrack so be advised.

I find it funny. Some friends, holding a funeral in a combat zone sure is smart! What was that supposed to be anyway? A tribute to how brave the girl was? I find this to be more normal then anything. You announce you and a bunch of people are about to mourn in some place that's a PVP zone. People attack you!? How bizarre!!

Personally, I find holding a funeral on a video game pathetic. I couldn't imagnie sitting there in-game and crying about this girl if I knew her. Maybe by other means, but I wouldn't attend to some retarded video game funeral. Sorry.

I find the hilarity in how people got so pissed off. It's kinda like saying "I GOT PVP'D. GM'S, DO SOMETHING!" same difference. There's no loopholes here. Next time don't hold a funeral in a PVP area, you stupid *****.

For the most part I was amused by it. But the whole taunting of it was crossing the line a tad. It's bad enough that you went and wrecked an event that alot of people showed up to to show their "respects" since they could not be present at the real world funeral. But then to take it so far as to then eulogize her is a bit f[black][/black]ucked up and disrespectful to the memory of this person.

Maybe it was just the Google copy of it, but you couldn't read 90% of the fuzzy-text which took away a lot of the humor, I'm sure.

Eh, I can see why they did it (have the funeral/pay respects) thing. since were all gamers here from various MMO's it becomes apparent that after spending so much time with a person/people online you become friends. if one of them died im sure you'd like to pay your respects, but your not about to go out to wherever they came from for the service.

I respect and understand what they did and from what I heard she had characters on both sides(horde and alliance) so they held it in a contested zone for both factions to pay respects. understandable but stupid, they were kinda asking for it picking a location like that, better off holding two separate services for both sides.

I think a good example of this would be here in the asylum, if say.. DSD died. if someone posted a farewell thread or something similar most of us would respond with sympathy and respect. but maybe a few jack holes from =28 or trolls posted flames or "she had it coming" everyone here would be hyperpissed (bad move considering she is liked and admins would slay them). at the same time it is a public forum and people can take pot shots at whomever and whatever they want, no matter how bad of taste or objectionable it is. (as is a contested zone in a PvP game)

nice thoughts + bad ideas + ***holes = long controversial threads

no offense DSD, I had to pick someone everyone liked and would stand behind, your name popped up first.

The music is what made me laugh.

/shrug

I see both sides of it, but honestly they knew they were on a pvp server and should have expected this.

Yeah I remember when this happened a couple of months ago and there was a big stir.
I thought it was a bit odd to have an in game funeral for the people who knew the person. But I guess they just wanted to show some sort of respect.
In a way they were kind of asking for it where they were wearing no armour and no weapon equipped on a PvP server.

I don't think it was the in-game actions of Serenity Now that pissed off people.

It was the dum[/black]bass comments on the forums afterwards.

Like "Even in death she sucks at PvP" etc.

One thing is when you keep it in-game. Sure, they could've held it in Mulgore or whatever. But making fun of the deceased on the public boards?

Fu[/black]cking teenagers.

An FFXI player on the Seraph server was murdered during a home invasion and he was playing the game at the time. Husband plays FFXI on that server and was fairly good game pals with the guy and he was pretty upset when I told him what happened. After the murder and word got out in game about how he died, his friends and linkshell held a memorial service in one of the towns.

This player was pretty well-respected and believe it or not, but one of his in-game friends named his son after this player's game name.
