State MottosFollow

On the commute to work this morning they were talking about state mottos. California's is "Eureka"--Greek word meaning "I have found it." Maryland's is apparently "Manly
Deeds, Womanly Words" WTF does that mean?

What's the motto for your state, province, etc. and what does it mean?

Ok, so it's really "State sovereignty, national union". Mine's better though.

I think ours is "Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem" which translates roughly to "We'll cut the head of any limey bastards who try to make us pay taxes on tea, but Hot sweaty meaty man meat marriage is A OK"

Your mother's a *****. You like to jack off dogs. That's right, you heard me. You like to grab that dog by the bone and rub it like a ski pole. Your dad? Gay. Your priest? Now, Ontario is "Loyal she began and loyal she remains". However our license plates read "Yours to discover".

I think it should read "At least we're not American".

Well according to that, Maine's state motto is Dirigo. Whatever, we don't use it anywhere except on our health care thingy. Vacationland is what's on all the license plates.

Something about being strong enough for a man, but made for a woman or possibly about drag queens.

South Carolina - Dum spiro spero and Animis opibusque parati The word "spes" is also shown below the motton on the state seal (below the figure of hope) and means, oddly enough, 'hope'.

The slogan thing is "Smiling faces, beautiful places" which is probably *****.

New York State's motto is Excelsior!

I wasn't certain what that meant so I looked it up.

ex·cel·si·or :

Slender, curved wood shavings used especially for packing.

Inspiring, is it not?

# Motto: "Fatti maschii parole femine," loosely translated "manly deeds, womanly words," but more accurately translated as "strong deeds, gentle words."

In other words Maryland=Jesus.

I live in Coventry UK which was up until recently part of Warwickshire the motto is "Non Sans Droict". Those litterary minded of you may know that to be Shakespear's motto. The county adopted it to honour it's most famous son. It is Norman-French and translates as "not without right". The city is now part of the West Midlands, which isn't really a county in the traditional sense and so doesn't really have a motto.

"Camera Principis" is the City Motto, which translates as "The Prince's Chamber". Although on all the City signs it says "Be inspired", which is actually quite amusing if you have ever been.
