Oilers fans jam Edmonton streets after thrilling playoff victory over Detroit

EDMONTON (CP) - Thousands of Edmonton Oilers fans jammed the city's bar district to celebrate their team's nail-biting 4-3 victory over Detroit which advanced the Oilers to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Strangers high-fived each other from car windows on Whyte Avenue on Monday night, while fans on the sidewalks hugged anyone who was wearing an Oilers jersey. A street performer with a saxophone played the theme from Hockey Night in Canada, but was almost completely drowned out by the din of honking horns and cheers of "Go Oilers!"

Many fans were too young to remember the last time the Oilers won the Stanley Cup back in 1990.

Others old enough to remember that victory, as well as the other four league championships the team won in the 1980s, say they're sensing the team is about to end a long drought.

Police were visible with pairs of officers stationed on street corners, but most revellers were well-behaved and there were no reports of trouble.

"There's a whole generation here that hasn't experienced the Stanley Cup," said Oiler fan Doug Pruden, 43, who watched the game in a bar on Whyte Avenue and was on the streets moments after it ended to celebrate.

Katie Smith, 20, isn't old enough to remember the Oilers' Cup dynasty but says she has a large collection of memorabilia from it.

Smith, like most fans celebrating on Edmonton streets, was so enthusiastic that she believes the team is about to win its first championship in 16 years.

"Oilers in the millennium," Smith screamed.

While some considered the amount of celebrating excessive for the first round of the playoffs, Jordan Giormetakis said he planned to party even harder if the Oilers advance further.

Giormetakis, who was waving a giant Oilers flag attached to a hockey stick and was running out on the street to hug people hanging out car windows, still considered his behaviour to be subdued.

"Round two, I'm going to get naked and run down Whyte Avenue!" Giormetakis shouted.
