My computer works fine with 1 gig of memory but if I add another gig it becomes unstable (freezes or restarts). I thought I had bad memory sticks and returned them for new ones but the problem still persists. Is there another reason this could happen?

Well that's a tricky one. Smiley: rolleyes Restart if your keyboard isn't working! Smiley: laugh

Edit-- And he filled in his message which makes my reply pointless.

Double edit-- Sounds like you installed the extra stick of RAM wrong.

Check the RAM slots. One of those might be the culprit. Also make sure the additional RAM is all compatible, as well.

Children should be kicked in the face when they open their noise holes. Ask your parents why they are neglecting your upbringing.

Git, did you bring in the old stick to make sure they were the same speed/brand?

It makes a big difference when going to dual sticks.

New comp. The first gig works fine putting in the second doesn't.

Clarification: Both gigs where purchased at the same time originaly.

How about if you put the second one in by itself?

I just wanted to jump in here and say I'm only reading this thread because I can't get sleepy and I was hoping this conversation would help.

It's not helping.

It works fine. Either I have something wrong with the ram slots or there is some other way that adding ram can make the computer unstable, like when adding hardware and not using the correct drivers can do it. Is there anything like that that can happen?

Without reading the manual on your MB, I'd say to determine if that's the problem, try each stick by itself in each slot. If it still works fine that way, then you have a syncing issue that is usually solved by down-clocking your bus speed. That usually only occurs on AMD systems though. Are you on AMD or Intel platform, and have you performed the above tests?
