Quote:
DUBLIN (Reuters) - Ice cream makers Ben & Jerry's have apologized for causing offence by calling a new flavor "Black & Tan" -- the nickname of a notoriously violent British militia that operated during Ireland's war of independence.

The ice cream, available only in the United States, is based on an ale and stout drink of the same name.

"Any reference on our part to the British Army unit was absolutely unintentional and no ill-will was ever intended," said a Ben & Jerry's spokesman.

"Ben & Jerry's was built on the philosophies of peace and love," he added.

The Black and Tans, so-called because of their two-tone uniforms, were recruited in the early 1920s to bolster the ranks of the police force in Ireland as anti-British sentiment grew.

They quickly gained a reputation for brutality and mention of the militia still arouses strong feelings in Ireland.

"I can't believe that Ben & Jerry's would be so insensitive to call an ice cream such a name and to launch it as a celebration of Irishness ... it's an insult!" wrote one blogger on www.junkfoodblog.com.

"I hope they don't try to launch it here in Ireland or I imagine they'll lose a lot of their fans."

Ben & Jerry's, a unit of Anglo-Dutch consumer goods giant Unilever Plc, prides itself on its commitment to friendly business. Its mission statement includes a pledge to show "a deep respect for human beings inside and outside our company and for the communities in which they live."

But notice there are no complaints about booze carrying the label of Black & Tan. If it was alcoholic would they be so offended? Smiley: oyvey

Yet they're ok with "Car Bombs"?

Those are real sensitive to the shenanigans in Northern Ireland.

A little from column a...

A little from column b...

Although, the last time I was in Ireland, I never actually asked for a carbomb. So I'm not entirely sure what I'd get.

HAHAH

WOW

Yeah.. This would be like realeasing a flavour of Ice Cream called the "SS" in Isreal.

THe Black and Tans were known to commonly torch entire towns and shoot every person in sight is one person from that town was suspect of being against the Crown. Thye basically treated the Irish citizen as they were at all out war with them....

They were basically like British terrorist... TAking into account that they resorted to attacking civillians so that they t even in some way get to the actual people fighting....

They were kind of like killer Green Berets.. battle hardened from WW1 and South Africa.. They were given that name by Irish people actually after "na Dúchrónaigh" which is some famous pack of killer hunting dogs.. which meant "Black and Tan".. but hardly anyone in the country spoke the native language.. so Black and Tan stuck.. They were actually called the Royal Irish Constablary Reserves.

Yeah.. we've had Black and Tan Guiness mixed with Bass for a long time... but I assumed that it was called that only in America .. I guess putting names like that on alchohol is OK but ICe Cream just goes too far Smiley: dubious
Then again... I suppose Ice Cream like that has more of a tendency to disseminate , unlike beer names.. which most likely don't change much.

In most bars in England you can order a Black and Tan safely, but you need to be sure of the bar 1st.

In Liverpool & Birmingham (more Micks than Brooklyn) it's likely to get you a fast, close-up introduction to a U-bend.

As for the rest of the UK, I always here it called B&T in Wales, and in most of Scotland (but NOT Glasgow)

In Ulster the phrase "Black & Tan" translates as "please take me to a ditch and turn my knee caps into a microspopic jigsaw puzzle".

Republicans see it as a reminder of British atrocities, while Unionists see it as taking the heroic B&Ts' name in vain. The ultimate "Lose:Lose" situation.
