My public service announcement for the day. Fortunately, I wear glasses so I'll be able to still see you and laugh when you have toadstools growing off of your peepers.
The Associated Press wrote:
The source of a spike in dangerous fungal eye infections linked by federal health officials to a contact lens solution sold by Bausch & Lomb Inc. remains a mystery, the eye-care products maker said Wednesday.

"As far as speculation about theories, there's a lot of them, we've run a lot of them to ground and come up with nothing," the company's chief executive, Ron Zarella, said in a conference call with analysts.

"Every additional test we've run suggests that the formulation is as safe and effective as anything on the market and in particular with regard to Fusarium."

The company halted U.S. shipments of its ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution Monday night while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention investigates 109 reports of infection caused by a fungus called Fusarium in patients in 17 states.

The agency has made no direct link between ReNu and the infections, traced back to June 2005, but a high incidence of the affected people had used the solution.

Bausch & Lomb, which also makes contact lenses, ophthalmic drugs and vision-correction surgical instruments, stopped short of pulling the brand, made at its factory in Greenville, S.C., but merchants led by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. began removing it from store shelves Tuesday.

I forwarded this to my wife yesterday since she uses that brand of eye solution and recently forgot to remove her contacts before sleeping. She has an eye appointment next week to make sure all is well and to get a new prescription. There is a good chance that there is nothing wrong since she has no symptoms, but that **** is scary.

That's what happens when you are constantly getting rammed in the eye with a mushroom-head. Some of the spores are bound to end up lodged in there.

This is why I only buy generic. Target may rape me on the accessories purchases, but at least they keep my peepers clean.

I wear gas permeable contacts and I use Boston solution. So I guess I'm in the clear.

I wish I could do the eye Lasik surgery thingy. Smiley: frown

I don't use solution and I don't ever take my contacts out, so I'm safe as safe can be.

Wal-Mart brand works really good too. I always thought Bausch & Lomb's solution felt too oily, so I never used it anyway.

Perhaps, but at least they are corrective sprems.

The last time I tried wearing my lenses, they caused my right eye to swell up painfully and precipitated a diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis.

Hah! That stuff was crap to begin with. Everytime I've ever used ReNu, it caused my eyes to burn. Not sure what they put in their formula, but it's painful for me to use.

While I'm sure lots of folks use generic brands, at least according to my incredibly small sample size survey1, ReNu is overwhelmining the most common brand name solution used by people who wear contacts. That could account for the fact that most people who got this infection used it.

1. Sample consists of myself, my former roomate, my sister, and my best friend. Margin of error is too high to contemplate...

The best.

Well not really, but "the best" for people too lazy to use a separate cleanser and non-preservative rinser.
