Just take it back and exchange it for another one. It sounds like it's mislabelled.

You used to sell PCs. HOw many times have you seen the problem be that the RAM was mislabeled rather than it being user error?

Some lap tops take actual physical memoryu and allocate it to video ram. You need to get into the bios to determine what the allocation is. If that number + the dxdiag number match, then that's where your ram is going. If not, it's probably going to the fubar and is doa. Based on your figures, I'd say that the problem is either the above or it is no longer recognising the old 256m stick.

Looks like the max per slot on that model is 512MB.

You could exchange your 1GB stick for two 512MB sticks and get 1GB max memory. That's as high as you can go with that model.

I had the same configuration with my laptop and made the same mistake.

How do I access/update my BIOS? I've honestly say that I've never done that before.

Find out what button is required to "enter setup" when you first turn your laptop on, commonly it's DEL, F10, F2, or F12. From there the procedure varies greatly by model/manufacturer.

Your problem does not sound like it's video allocation to me, since that model laptop only allocates 64MB (max) of the memory for use by the video card

When a single RAM stick is defective it either works or it doesn't. There is no 'Half Working' status.

I've seen RAM mislabelled a number of times. Often it's the manufacturer but sometimes retailers will change the labelling to ***** the customer.

It sucks having to tell a customer that the 1gb that they got at a 'great deal' from the hock shop down the street is really a 512mb stick.

I've bought well over a thousand sticks of RAM for the various companies I work for. Some online, some at different shops..etc.

I've never seen a problem with RAM be due to mislabeled memory. It's always been either, bad RAM (common), or wierd configuration sh[Aqua][/Aqua]it like Twiz is dealing with.

With different speeds and older systems, you see some fu[Aliceblue]cked up **** too. Crap-tops are usually easier to trouble-shoot. Motherboard maxes are common as you pointed out, second is video allocation.

I hate hardware. Especially old hardware.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Toshiba laptop, as well as every Dell I've ever owned.

Many of them do have crappy configuration quriks like this one that Baron Von Twizzlemeister has just recently experienced.

I'm only using a laptop now, as the baby stole my office Smiley: mad

It's not so bad though...it runs WoW well enough!

Traded the 1GB chip in for two 512's. I have yet to test WoW performance, but at least my dxdiag recognizes all of it!
