I just bought and installed 1GB of memory into my laptop, yet I see absolutely no increase in performance. Am I missing something?

How much memory did you have before?

Is it showing up at post/in your system info?

I had two 256KB chips before. I replaced one with a 1GB chip.

As to the rest... English please.

Right click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop and select "Properties". How much ram does it say that you have?

Why replace one? Does your computer actually only have two slots? I think the standard is four.

I would advise pulling the other 256MB ship and try running it with just the 1GB. See how that flies (check the bootup/POST, system properties, etc) then try adding the other stick(s) back.

POST = Power-On Self Test. Your PC scans and displays hardware info on the screen when you start it up.

This is on a laptop, if that makes any difference.

Laptops commonly come with 2 RAM slots.

Oddly enough, most of the desktops I've dealt with recently...have 3. Not 4.

I've sold many PCs with 2 slots. They're often the cheaper of the bunch.

The chips might be teamed, so they have to be the same size for them to work well.

I forget what that's called... ECC? Bah, who cares.

dxdiag counts RAM differently. Some manufacturers count 1mb as 1000000 bytes. dxdiag must be counting it as 1048576 bytes.

So what you're saying is that I'd be better off removing the remaining 256 chip?

Give me about 10 minutes, and I'll tell you how that goes.

I was expecting to hear about the morning after a particularly hardy night of drinking. Like a dead hooker in the bathtub, or something. I once awoke next to some random nubile thing with the stench of liquor and ****** permeating my very being, and made my way out of her home after collecting some of her marijuana stash. I made the long walk home, giggling to myself at the stolen pot and the animal acts we had performed the night before, thinking myself quite the rogue. It wasn't until I jumped in the shower and began washing her off that I realized her revenge.

The lazy broad had deposited a wad of chewing gum in the afro below my equator. I had no choice but to scissor the gum out of my pubic jungle. I recall seeing a wastebasket next to her bed, and wondered why she hadn't taken the extra time to fling the gum into the trashcan. In the end I thought of it like the tree next to a roller coaster, where folks stick their gum before embarking on the wild ride so as to not choke on it. I also counted my blessings that I hadn't woke with a roll of certs inserted in my cavity.

Moral of the story: sorry, there really isn't one, but good luck with your memory, or lack thereof.

Well...yeah, I know this, but then the math still doesn't make sense. Unless his 1GB is really 512MB. I used to run 768mb on my old desktop.

Laptops often use shared video memory too. Maybe that ate some of it. Check your bios settings.

my guess is your laptop is expecting a SIMM and your chip is DIMM...

If you still have the 256 in, your total will be 768...I bet if you take it out, you'll only have 512 even thought your chip is 1GB..it's 512 on one side, 512 on the other...

not saying that's the case, but it's possible.

That normally isn't subtracted from the amount shown in the My Computer properties window, nor dxDiag.

Yeah, I was thinking a combination of the dxdiag count and a mislabelled RAM chip would produce this.

ARRG

There are several reasons why this may be occcuring.

IF in fact he did only put the single 1GB chip in and it is still reading as something lower, it may be the case that his motherboard may just not be equiped to recognize that much RAM. Perhaps he needs up update is BIOS. There is also the slim chance that there is some program running that is taking up that much memory as well.

I don't think he tried just putting the single chip in yet.
RAM does funny things wehn it's mixed together.

RAM has caused some of the most unusal errors I have ever seen.

I pulled out the other 256 chip, and it said that I had 448MB of RAM. Then, I switched the slot that the 1GB chip was in, and it's still at 704MB.

I think I might exchange this thing for a 512 if I can't get full performance.

Very true. That and the fact that I haven't even tried upgrading a laptop yet means I should probably shut the fu[black][/black]ck up for now. Though mine has a similar configuration, and I will upgrade it eventually, I will keep an eye on the proceedings here.

Demea: Isn't it much more convenient to have another computer online while you're tearing apart this one? Smiley: grin
