Hey all,

I don't normally post in the Asylum, I'm normally over in the WoW forums, but this isn't about WoW so I thought this might be the right place to ask.

Can anyone reccomend any good combat flight simulation games?

I do kinda like the Microsoft Combat Flight Sim, I like the old WWII piston engine fighter dogfight sims, but would also like some sims of air to air combat or bombing mission with modern jet fighters and long range missiles.

I like real simulator type games with real cockpit views and stuff and not the more "arcade" type games.

Can anyone reccomend any really good, realistic ones to try out?

A b-17 bombing type thing you be cool, as well as like anything involving the F-117 or SR71 if such a thing exists.

Carrier takeoffs and landings would rock, too.

(just listing some stuff I like)

There is kind of a gap in available flight sims vs available pilots at the moment, but there are a few good ones out there. The IL2 Sturmovich gold pack is about the msot realistic WWII Sim out there at the moment. Flight Sim 2004 is still the difinitive non-combat flight sim around, and you can get a SR-71 or a F-117 for it. Flight Sim 2006 will be out in about 2 months.

To get the most up to date information, evn if you don't have a Thrustmaster Hotas Cougar stick yet, i'd reccomend here:

I read about the IL2 Sturmovich sim.. and the screen shots looked cool, but is the only plane that you can fly in it just the Sturmovich or are there other planes you can fly and the game is just named that?

All sorts of Planes. Basically every WWII fighter aircraft and some of the medium bombers on all sides.

I like flying the VTOL in GTA: San Andreas. The Apache is pretty cool too.

One of my favorite games from the days of old is MicroProse's Apache Gunship.

Must be a hotlinking issue. Oh well -- pretend it's a snappy screenshot from an old DOS game 'cause I don't care enough to fix it.

I had that game for the C-64. It was one of my first flight sim games! Those were the days. Back when people knew how to spell!

Word! That's kickin' it old school!.. I used to love to play that!..I played that on my rockin' Tandy 1000 computer... that thing was pimp. 5 1/4" drive and all. That game rocked for it's time. "Should I use my Hellfires or my 2.75" rockets to knock out that tank?"

Sweet.

Sweet.

As I recall, the rockets weren't used on heavy armor and was only for personnel or light vehicles. I could be wrong though! Smiley: smile

Boy. Getting all nostalgic about these games. The computer I played Gunship on was a PS/2 286. MicroProse really was the sh[black][/black]it. I used to play Pirates! on my sister's black%white Mac LC II. Never even had the game validation answers (great "copy protection", eh?) so always played with a handful of men floating in a bathtub.

There is no more realistic flight sim than Falcon 4.0-- not that that is the definition of a good flt sim. However, in terms of getting as close to the mark as the real thing, short of the actual experience of flying (which no non-full motion sim can mimic, nor come even remotely close to) it gives you a sense of just how complicated and involved the process is to go from BATT off to motoring down the runway under your own power.
