SourceKUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - A Malaysian man said he nearly fainted when he received a U.S. $218 trillion phone bill and was ordered to pay up within 10 days or face prosecution, a newspaper reported Monday.

Yahaya Wahab said he disconnected his late father's phone line in January after he died and settled the 84-ringgit (U.S. $23) bill, the New Straits Times reported.

But Telekom Malaysia later sent him a 806,400,000,000,000.01-ringgit (U.S. $218 trillion) bill for recent telephone calls along with orders to settle within 10 days or face legal proceedings, the newspaper reported.

It wasn't clear whether the bill was a mistake, or if Yahaya's father's phone line was used illegally after his death.

"If the company wants to seek legal action as mentioned in the letter, I'm ready to face it," the paper quoted Yahaya as saying. "In fact, I can't wait to face it," he said.

Yahaya, from northern Kedah state, received a notice from the company's debt-collection agency in early April, the paper said. Yahaya said he nearly fainted when he saw the new bill.

Government-linked Telekom Malaysia Bhd. is the country's largest telecommunications company.

A company official, who declined to be identified as she was not authorized to speak to the media, said Telekom Malaysia was aware of Yahaya's case and would address it. She did not provide further details.

That's a lot of ringgits.

Here in the American States that which are United, I'd laugh off such a bill as ludicrous. But, for all I know about Malaysia, they might stick bamboo splinters under your thumbnails and stuff your urethra with fire ants for that sort of thing.

A few years ago I was on a plane next to a man from Singapore. My wife offered him a piece of gum and he declined, stating that it was illegal to chew gum in Singapore. This caught my wife by surprise and she said "Oh My God, I would DIE!" He thought she seriously believed they would kill you for chewing gum and he spent the next few minutes assuring her that they wouldn't kill her, but she would have to pay a fine.

Bush is behind it. He had to find SOME way to get the national debt paid off. Why not get an oompa-loompa to pay it? Makes perfect sense (in Bush world).

$218 Trillion might cover us until he leaves office.

Nah. I really think this is the funniest part:

It wasn't clear? To whom? Does anyone, even the most braindead reporter, actually think it's possible for someone to rack up 218 Trillion (with a "T"!) dollars on a single phone line, in under 3 months?

For the math impared: Assuming he closed the bill out in January, as the article states, then we're talking about approximately 70 days to rack up that bill after that point. That would require that the one line be on continuously and charged approximately $2.1 million dollars a minute. Even AT&T doesn't charge that much...
