The Chicago Tribune wrote:
The new test for foreigners who want to apply for Dutch residency is, well, very Dutch.

It features a DVD that illustrates various aspects of Dutch life, including, most notably, a topless woman frolicking in the surf and two men kissing warmly. The message couldn't be more explicit: This is who we are; if you don't accept it, don't come.

Although the DVD doesn't single out any particular group, the intended target of the message is clear. Growing numbers of conservative Muslim immigrants are seen by many Dutch as posing a threat to the Netherlands' liberal consensus and easygoing lifestyle.
[...]
The Dutch entrance exam, which became mandatory last month, has been praised by politicians who believe it is a good way of screening out people who are not suited to live in the Netherlands.

"It's like the warning label on the cigarette packs," said Marco Pastors, a Rotterdam city councilman whose Leefbaar Rotterdam Party has been labeled anti-Muslim for its support of strict immigration controls.
[...]
In addition to the brief scenes of nudity and homosexuality, the 104-minute DVD warns prospective immigrants that the weather in the Netherlands is cold, housing is expensive and the country is flood-prone. It also informs them that honor killing, wife-beating and female circumcision are crimes.

The exam preparation packet and DVD cost about $80. The materials are available in 14 languages, including Rif Berber, Kurdish, Indonesian and Thai. The fee to take the exam is $425, which also could discourage some candidates.

The test, based on information found on the DVD, will be administered at Dutch embassies. In addition to answering questions about the history and lifestyle of the Netherlands, applicants will have to demonstrate a basic competence in the Dutch language.
Complete Story

Good? Bad? Is it hypocritical for a "socially liberal" nation to effectively tell an ethnic/religious group "stay home" or is it justified by protecting the 'tolerant' policies from a growing conservative bloc that would like to change them?

They should build a wall around their country and deport all conservative heterosexual nonsmokers.

They should make you eat fries drowning in mayo as part of the test. That could stop a few immigrations too.

I dont look at it as them telling people to stay home. I saw it more as a warning to those seeking entrance that this is how their country is and if its not what youre willing to deal with its not a place for you. Personally I find it refreshing. They're upfront about what the country and the people are about. If immigrants dont like it, they dont have to move there

I love mayo on my fries. On everything, really.

Anyways...what's with the "Growing numbers of conservative Muslim immigrants"? Is there any known reason for them to be flocking to a cold, wet, ultra-liberal western nation?

I wondered the same thing. Is there something in the Koran about tulips and windmills that I haven't heard about?

I agree with Lady DSD. When immigration is discussed in the context of integration it often seems to me that the emphasis is on the native populations understanding of the immigrants rather than the other way round.

I think that it is nice to see a nation willing to say "This is who we are, if you are happy with that then welcome. If not, then hey, move to Belgium."

Ok, so maybe they haven't said that, but they might if they were asked.....

Edit: mmmmmm Chips and Mayo. (Oops my Britishness is showing, I'll be adding gravy next!)

So is all this supposed to be some sort of contrast to the U.S. where we accept anyone and then next thing you know we have Hispanics as the largest minority (read: voters) dictating what languages we must speak, our employment practices, and most ironically our immigration policy?

I don't think the Dutch set out to contrast the U.S. but any two policies can be compared, I suppose.

The cultural changes the Muslims bring to the Netherlands seem to be of a different sort than those the Latino population brings to the United States. Despite the majority of the immigrant Latinos being Catholic, they don't form a religiously conservative bloc that objects to national policies by basis of faith.

If they did, the Pubbies wouldn't be trying to build a fence to keep them out Smiley: wink2

Good, I agree with old Lady DSD. Although I bet this DVD takes it over the top and maybe this means they actually ARE trying to keep some people out. I mean, I just doubt the occurance of these two things are overly public. Either way, I like the honesty. It probably avoids some people making some very bad decisions about where they would like to live.

Those kooky little conservative muslims and their vitriolic ways. Sounds like it's become a fashionable way to be intolerant these days.
