I'm taking a trip to Chicago with a couple of friends this summer. I've been there a couple of times before, but one of the guys has never been to any big city at all. I'd guess Little Rock is the biggest place he has seen.

Anyone have suggestions of things to do/see in Chicago? On the agenda so far are Cubs game, King Tut exhibit, Sears tower, and one of the river/lake tours in the boats (need to check Dave Matthews schedule first).

None of us are big drinkers/"partiers" so bars, clubs, etc would probably not be of interest unless there is some non-alcoholic reason to be there.

We have 3 days to fill up. Suggestions please!

The only city in the country that starts with a C, ends in an O, and has hicag in the middle.

Never been there.

Oh yeah, and what is the name of the guy that stands on the bridge in fancy suits and waves at the tour boats as they go under? I want to say "Vincent" or something but I'm not sure.

I have a low quality digital pic of that dude around here somewhere...

I'd almost skip the Sears Tower and have lunch at the Signature Room atop the John Hancock tower instead. You skip the long-*** wait, there's no charge for admission and the difference in the view is largely academic at that height.

Dinner at the restaurant is rather expensive but sandwiches in the bar are about $12 last I was there. Considering that a ticket to the Sears Tower skydeck is $12, at least this way you get fed.

If you do a boat tour, do the architectural one. You get to see a lot of the best parts of the city, and the architecture of Chicago is quite amazing. You get some nice little historical facts too, like about the Chicago fire for example.

A lot of people like to visit Navy Pier, too. So you might want to check that out. Also, the top of the John Hancock building has a great view and a nice bar and restaurant.

It somehow doesn't sound as "street" when you say it. Smiley: confused

I reccommend a few things in Chicago (if your not going to drink that is)

The Field Museum
1400 S. Lake Shore Drive
312.922.9410
www.fmnh.org

The Shedd Aquarium
1200 S. Lakeshore Drive
312.939.2438
www.sheddnet.org

Lincoln Park Zoo
2200 N. Cannon Drive
312.742.2000
www.lpzoo.com

and Navy Pier, which I believe is located off of Lakeshore Drive.
Good times for the non-drinkers.

If you see that ***** Oprah, smack her, I blame all of Tom Cruise on her.

I type to slow. Smiley: cry

I forgot all about Oprah....

When are you going? If it's in July, you can go to the Taste of Chicago. July 18 through August 29 is the Outdoor Film Festival, and the World Music Festival is in September.

In my thirty-three years of residency in the Chicagoland metropolitian area, I've yet to hear a single report from Taste of Chicago where someone said it was worth it.

I feel like it is required that we take the one guy to the Sears Tower since he has never even really seen tall buildings before. Smiley: laugh We might also check out the John Hancock building too though.

We'll be there from July 26-30.

This is that crazy suit guy I was talking about:

S'what I do.

It might be easier if we knew more about you and your buddies, Mr. Crescentfresh. I will happily expound upon the virtues of the Shedd or the Field or the Chicago Art Institute but, unless your friends are into fish, dinosaurs and French Impressionism you may feel you wasted your time and money when you exit the building.

For some free, low-brow enjoyment, visit and get your photo taken with Buckingham Fountain, as seen in the opening credits of Married... with Children

Let's see. Fish and dinosaurs are good, French Impressionism probably not so much.

We all like (at list a little) sports, museums, movies, tall buildings, cool views. I especially like to go anywhere that I recognize from tv/movies so Buckingham Fountain seems cool to me. I also remember one of the guys asking me something about Nike Town? I'm not quite sure what that is or if there is one there.

Basically, we have 3 country guys going to the city and we want to see the sights. One of the guys is pretty religious so we can't just go anywhere, unless we ditch him. Smiley: smile

Two things.

Art Institute of Chicago

Downtown and easy to get to. Has some great impressionist works along with a nice section of modern art. Most people really love the armor and weapons displays.

Ravinia Music Festival

Not downtown, but an easy Train ride. Lawn seats are cheap and it is a gorgeous outdoor venue. Depending on when you go, there may be something you'd like to see. (BTW Hope you like classical music as Ravinia only has 2 non-classical weeks, Jazz and Folk).

Take him on a walk through the Boystown neighborhood. Nothing could sound more wholesome and family-oriented than that, huh?
