Google Vs Ask.comFollow

#1 Apr 04 2006 at 3:48 AM Rating: Decent
Alright, we all know Google pwns when it comes to searches. However, I think they may have some real competition with Ask.com. I know Ask.com has been around for a while, but their new wave of commercials has been having me try them recently, and I must say, I get better results (at least more accurate) when using Ask.com.

What about yall? Still Googling, or you an Asker now?

I actually tend to use Yahoo for searches a bit more now. Google hasn't impressed me for a while.

depending on what I'm looking for and how much I want to find I'll usually use a variety. I usually always start with Google, then I'll hit metacrawler if Google didn't get me what I was looking for.

I used to be a devout metacrawler user, until about 2001 when the results started getting really screwy due to folks seeding their meta tags with info not relavent to their page. That when I started search with a web crawler engine like Google.

For the most part, Google treats me well, I haven't checked out Ask.com in years, but I may have to after seeing these new commercials.

I've tried Ask and for the most part, when I've done a search on it, I've gotten pretty good hits. I still Google more, mostly out of habit.

I pretty much live by Google (still using their custom homepage) but if I need something specific (like, for example, "How do I notarize a letter?") I'll ask.com. I'm not that easily swayed by commercials like you sheep.

I've always been a fan of Altavista myself. Nowadays they all seem to use each other to generate more matches.

You know, back in the day I was a hardcore Altavista fan but I migrated to google and I don't see myself going back.

Frankly, google is the next microsoft (ok, so microsoft has its problems too but I mean it's the next giant). They are quickly expanding their operation with tons of google products which at the moment are mostly free except for the advertising products. They even have a "googlepack" with most of their software (google earth, google talk, etc) but also includes a lot of software they're apparently backing now such as "Trillian" a multi-chat complilation program (aim, msn, icq, irc, yahoo and I believe they do have plug-ins to include others), Symantec virus protection, and many others.

Before we know it your local best-buy will be selling "Windows", "Apple", and "Google". They already have begun the underlying structure, getting people attached to their "google desktop" software. At some point they may stop updating the standalone program and expand to an OS in which case the current users who are slowly becoming addicted to the program will immidiately go pick up "Google OS1.5"

I mean look at how a WoW gamer reacts when their favorite mod has no update. Apply this to the average user, and more so to business men and the like who rely on the RSS feeds, news clip section and gmail display provided by google desktop and you already have a large group of people who are guaranteed to buy the OS and recruit others after using it.

I like to think of myself as the "Big Cat". Except I'd probably be a de-clawed version.

...And i'm not very big.

Fun site though.

It's asmusing in context but, if I was looking for information on the archangel, it wouldn't be especially helpful.

I've wanted to try Ask, but since every computer I use lately seems to have a link to Google, I tend to use it. If I can't find what I need, I'll try Yahoo.
