Just out of random curiosity....Follow

#1 Apr 01 2006 at 12:39 AM Rating: Good

What blogs, if any, do you read?

Every time I sit down to surf the internet, I glance at the Asylum and then move to The Huffington Post, Eschaton, This Modern World, MaxSpeak! You Listen, and Firedoglake.

Through browsing these regular stops, I always seem to end up on Media Matters, Crooks and Liars, AMERICAblog, and I am sure many others that I am just not thinking about. I then always end up going back to Huffington Post and reading random news stories. I would say I visit that site and Eschaton the most.

Really, I am just wondering what else people are reading for news and political gossip.

None.

The main reason why I post is because I'm kind of curious about the same thing. The whole "blogging" phenomena is something that just moved right on past me. Technically I read the blogs of some of the columnists linked through the Chicago Tribune's site but those are paid columnists for a print media with editorial oversight and I don't really view that as the same thing as "Mystery Joe's Liberal Secrets Revealed Blog" or whatever.

Closest I come is dropping by Go Fug Yourself about once a month to catch up Smiley: laugh

I'm afraid I don't really read any either, save the few that close friends of mine keep about their personal lives (and only on occasion). But I've never been one to keep up on current events of any sort, so I'm not a good gauge of what the typical folk' browse.

P.S. I hate that word, 'blog'....it sounds so unsophisticated...

I hate the word "Blog" as well. The media would have me believe that this is what hip, edgy people were calling web logs, but I'm not buying it. The word smacks of fakeness and I just know someone out there decided to just tell us that this is what people are calling web logs when, in fact, not a single person was.

Not to totally derail the thread before the light of day, but that just made me think of those silly TV news 'exclusives' that I see from time to time directed at parents with technophobia.

I caught a bit of one about a month ago along the lines of "Be careful, your child might be BLOGGING!!. It was one of those ignorant, fear-inducing specials that showed absolultely no knowledge of what the internet is really like. I remember them saying something to the extent of: "your child could be obsessed with his/her internet persona, which might not be representative of who they are in real life..." yada yada...

Then I think they tied it to suicidal tendencies somehow.

Now I see where my mom gets this fear that having a facebook.com profile means that someone will inevitably steal my identity.

When I worked I used to read the one titled "Another Little Disappointment" which someone had linked here awhile back, because it was damned funny. Unfortunately I had it bookmarked at work and not at home, and now I'm unable to find it because I don't work anymore. You know, if someone knows what I'm talking about, I'd really appreciate the link again.

That's it, thanks Eldy. I must have googled every possible combination of disappointment and blog except the one that returned that blog on the first twenty pages. I did find out there's a lot of sad folks out there, though, which made me feel warm inside.

Ditto, and I really don't feel that my life is the worse for it.

Well, I didn't start paying any attention to blogs until about a year ago. I looked out of curiosity, and they became quite addictive. I used to be an avid CNN watcher for my news, supplemented by the New York Times and Newsweek every once in a while. Once I started looking at blogs, I have found that I read more newspapers (although online), and I feel more informed about what is going on in the world. There are alot of stories that CNN just doesn't talk about, or just breezes over.

For some reason I am sort of suprised you don't read any blogs, Jophiel.

I check out rocketboom once in a while. I think they actually call it a 'vlog' though because it is video.
