Quote:
LONDON — In the weeks before the United States-led invasion of Iraq, as the United States and Britain pressed for a second United Nations resolution condemning Iraq, President Bush's public ultimatum to Saddam Hussein was blunt: Disarm or face war.

But behind closed doors, the president was certain that war was inevitable. During a private two-hour meeting in the Oval Office on Jan. 31, 2003, he made clear to Prime Minister Tony Blair of Britain that he was determined to invade Iraq without the second resolution, or even if international arms inspectors failed to find unconventional weapons, said a confidential memo about the meeting written by Mr. Blair's top foreign policy adviser and reviewed by The New York Times.
...

The memo also shows that the president and the prime minister acknowledged that no unconventional weapons had been found inside Iraq. Faced with the possibility of not finding any before the planned invasion, Mr. Bush talked about several ways to provoke a confrontation, including a proposal to paint a United States surveillance plane in the colors of the United Nations in hopes of drawing fire, or assassinating Mr. Hussein.

So Bush has lied some more I suppose. Though I still wonder why he still likes to go about Iraq being a threat all the time instead of trying to play up making Iraq into such a great place even though people are being killed there constantly.

10 bucks, and a t-shirt says Hussein dies of some "freak accident" or "natural causes" prior to the next election.

Though I still wonder why he still likes to go about Iraq being a threat all the time i
---------------------------------------------

because people are stupid and didnt learn a thing from vietnam.

they will believe what ever their leader tells them, irreguardless of the facts for the most part. as long as he keeps pounding in the threat message, enough of you ignorant blind party voters will keep believing it to keep him form getting enough support to be impeached.

thats why clinton gets impeachment for lying about a *******, and Bush gets "censored" for doing exactly the same thing Nixon was impeached for, domestic spying.

ill bet many of you dont know that all Bush had to do was spy first, and then get permission from a special court within 48 hours of doing so, and completly ignored the special court anyway.

iraq was a lie, and people died. a slogan i borrowed from a vietnam protest. sound familliar?

he pounds the threat message because it will keep enough of you from giving senators the support they need to risk their worthless political necks from trying to impeach this idiot. as long as enough of you really believe some pissant little hole in the wall was a threat to this country, he gets away with it. all about controlling the masses. welcome to politics.

this memo is old news to anyone who was paying attention to the lead up to war. Bush was going to iraq the day he was elected, and it had nothing to do with weapons or a threat to our country.

I forgot two other viable forms of death for Mr. Hussein now that you mention it. He will inexplicably "commit suicide", or an Iranian/Syrian Assassin hit him, according to American media of course.

Is this memo another one of those forgery deals like the CBS Dan Rather thing? Funny how easily people forget stuff like that.

-------------------------------------------------------

its funny how people hear what they want to hear and ignor the facts.

Rather,s little deal was never proven to be false in content. the big stink was he could not positivly verify the authenticity of the document, not that it was not an actual factual docunemtn, but that he could not prove it.

the content was never disputed, ever, by the whitehouse. they focused on blasting the credibility of the news station for not proving the document was authentic, and compeltly sidestepped the point of the information.

yes, we do remember. and your post is living proof all teh government has to do is say ot long enough and people will believe it irreguardless of the actual FACTS.

just like the book that lady wrote about bush using cocain at parties, the EVIDEVCE was slammed by the whitehouse, but the facts were never disputed. as a result, half of you thing the book was a lie. and in the end, when faced with facts, this quote directly from bush "i never denied i used cocain..." AFTER the election ofcoarse.

but im betting you didnt se that either because you didnt WANT to see it.

thats why the pounding of the "threat" message. it keeps stupid people stupid.

Love how a guy goes there once and is suddenly on a first name basis... ;)

This memo, just like the earlier Downing Street memo are notes taken from planning sessions. Lots of ideas get floated at meetings like that. I think it's not sinister at all that Bush didn't believe Saddam would meet the terms of the last UN resolution (after all, Saddam didn't meet the first 12, why assume different?). Nor do I find it sinister that he didn't have faith in the UN to actually do anything about that failure to comply (they didn't when Saddam failed to comply with the last 12, right?). If anything, the memo show's that he had a pretty good grasp of the situation. Um... Anyone who *really* thought that final UN resolution was anything more then a legal setup to allow a US invastion of Iraq is incredibly naive. We knew that Iraq would not comply. We knew that the UN would do nothing about it. We had to go through the motions of givng both the opportunity to prove us wrong. They didn't. No surprise.

Did someone float the idea of painting a US plane to look like a UN plane in the hopes it would be shot down? Maybe. Was it taken seriously? Was it a joke? Where you there to know? Ultimately, this memo, just like the last one, fuels tons of speculation, but really doesn't change any facts at all.

The point isn't whether or not anyone seriously planned to paint a plane. The point is that the folks in charge were thinking of ways to provoke the war they wanted regardless of whether or not the U.N./WMD angle worked out for them.

The point is that the US/UK administration was ready to use illegal means to go to war all along. That they didnt give a **** about international law. That they acted like drunken cow-boys after rodeo wandering how to get away with murder by pretending it was self-defence.

Nothing new though, I agree.

Since this is about Bush and Blair I'll take the opportunity to tell a Bush/Blair joke my husband told me last week:

George Bush is traveling the world and he stops to visit the Queen in England. He tells her, "You've got a really good thing going here, how do you find such good people to work for you?"

The Queen says, "Well, I ask my people a riddle and if they get it correct, I hire them. Watch this." She brings in Tony Blair.

"Tony, if your mother has a child that isn't your brother and isn't your sister, who is it?"
Tony says, "That's easy, it's me!"
The Queen says, "You see?"
George says, "Hmm, ok."

He goes back to the US and calls in **** Cheney. "****, if your mother has a child that isn't your brother and isn't your sister, who is it?" **** thinks for a while and finally says, "I don't know, I'll have to get back to you on that." So **** goes around to Condi Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, Karl Rove; none of them know the answer. Finally he comes to Colin Powell and asks him the riddle.

Colin answers, "That's easy, it's me!"

So **** goes back to George and says, "Sir, I have the answer. It's Colin Powell."

And George says, "You dummy! It's Tony Blair!!"

Donald Rumsfeld, while giving the President his daily briefing,
concludes by saying: "Yesterday, 3 Brazilian soldiers were killed."

"OH NO!" the President exclaims. "That's terrible!"

His staff sits stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watching as the President sits, head in hands.

Finally, the President looks up and asks,
"How many is a brazillion?"
