As many of you know, I am a helicopter pilot of an indeterminent color who works for a nationwide air ambulance service. To make a long story short, the hospital I worked for sold the helicpter program and I took a 20% pay cut for the past year. However, this new company is unionized and in precisely 1 hour and 19 minutes we will know if the proposed contract that the negotiating teams came to terms on will be ratified by the pilot body.
The bottom line is that if it fails to get approved I will continue to make substantially less than I used to and likely will eventually have to strike thus earning even less money for the household budget. If it get approved I will be the happy recipient of an area cost of living adjustment that places me well inside six figures-- a salary which as a helicopter pilot is an unimaginable sum, especially when you recognise that in terms of pride in our jobs we are barely a step up from being a piano player in a house of ill repute.
The sticking point is that the base salary increase is modest, to say the least. For the average pilot who lives in BFE, Iowa, the salary increase may not be enough for them to vote for the new contract, but me it's all about the area cost of living which bumps my salary up by 160%.
