When I was contracting, I did have a real sort of pride in the fact that whatever I was getting was due to my own effort, and that the beauracracy and paperwork, while still mountainous, at least were my own responsibility. Not everyone has a flexible job with great hours, and some people need the feeling of being the captains of their own ship and all that.

Why? Just curious what you feel the rewards are, not trying to argue.

I have insurance, very little paperwork (besides the stuff actually associated with my task), not much stress and a good deal of flexibility in my scheduling when things pop up. I know I can walk in every day at 8-8:30am and kick out the door at 4:30. Low muss, little fuss.

Is it simply intrinsic rewards such as the whole feel-good glow and pride and that sort of thing or are there extrinstic rewards you reap that you don't think you'd get as an employee?

Very simply put, there are two reasons. One is flexability. I love the fact I dont have to argue with anyone if I need time of for family needs. No matter what, family for me comes first. If I need time off for something I have it. My clients have been with me for almost ten years and I have established a reputation with them so they know if I need time off, they dont get upset.

The second reason is that I am responsible for me. I am my own boss. While it wasn't every job, I have worked for people who would try to take advantage of my high standard work ethics, calling me in for last minute things or having me come in much earlier or staying later than I was scheduled for. Rarely did I say no and they would know that. It was good in the long run I was like that because I was able to cultivate my clientelle with people who still know my work ethics are just as high. But while dealing with paperwork and insurance can be a hassle I have no one I need to impress further except myself and my clients.

As for insurance, my line of career rarely offers health or dental anyways so I rarely had that covered on my own. Only one job I ever worked for offered it. I'm lucky as I can be on my spouses insurance and thats one headache I dont have to worry about.

Sure there is that pride of working on your own. Im proud that I was even able to get out on my own in my line of business. But that isnt even on the top reasons of why I woudl choose it.

Pros and cons to every type of employment, but I've done both and I can say that being self employed wins hands down for my needs in life

Good enough for me.

I'm sure it's all job and situation dependant. But, all things being equal, I'd rather have a nice, suitable job that keeps me comfortable than the same flexibility, etc and the hassles of ownership. But that's just me and I know my opinion isn't universal.

I know, the name is stupid and I thought about begging to get my name changed a few times but Git is who I am here. Changing that would be like Totem bleaching his skin or Thundra without the multiple personalities or AH without the pot.

For me it's the pleasure of not working for someone you know you are smarter than and ...I don't like showing up on time. Showing up everyday on time is hard!

Needing to edit your single sentence response and failing to provide a period is a sure indicator of your superiority. Hey though, nice first post!

Here I was, hoping you'd be someone's sock with at least a little venom to keep me entertained for a commercial break during Law & Order:SVU, and there you are, just a sh[red][/red]itty typist. File it away under disappointment and back to the show.

I've no idea who or what an ArizonaRon is, aside from a banned putz, but the fact that he thought I was worth provoking is pretty cool.

I'd feel worse except Bhodi and I went on to kick orc *** later and we did fine against some stiff odds.

I'm starting to think maybe I wasn't the problem Smiley: wink2

Who needs to duel? DSD and I?

That would be as easy as clicking on the other person and typing /duel. Who's going to bother us?
