Juan Luis Guerra y la 4.40 is a group you can only truly appreciate if you know the language. You didn't ask what I thought you would enjoy, just what I did, and Juan Luis writes lyrics that have been compared to Neruda's because of their poetry. The music itself is perfect for moonlit romance and sangrÃa. Take note, Nobs:

Andaré sin saberlo
calzaré de tu cuerpo
como huellas en hierro
comeré lo que sobre
dentro de tu corazón.

Y seré un mar desierto
una frase silente
la elegÃÂa de un beso
un planeta de celos,
esculpiendo una canción.

Me tosté en tus mejillas
como el sol en la tarde
se desgarra mi cuerpo
y no vivo un segundo
para decirte que sin ti, muero.
Me quedé en tus pupilas mi bien
ya no cierro los ojos
me tiré a lo más hondo
y me ahogo en los mares
de tu partida.

Abbey Road was my initial thought as well, because on a deserted island I think the orgasmic crescendo the second half of the album builds to would be the ultimate deterant to chewing of my own extremities. Unfortunately The Beatles just aren't edgey enough to garner respect aorund here.

It was the first one to pop into my head as well. The second side of the album (Here Comes the Sun and forward) is one of the finest examples of the sum being greater than its parts and is probably the finest lp side of its era.

Todd Rundgren's Something/Anything kept popping into my head too, but he's a little too mood dependent for me.

When I was milling over what to pick I was surprised how many of my favorites were immediatly eliminated for not having a lot of emotional range. There are tons of bands that have one or two modes of expression that they excel at. It's a rarity to find an album of anyone that is truly diverse.

I certainly wouldn't want to be stuck with only one album and have it be one dimensional, no matter how good it is.

Debalic mentioned The Kinks - To The Bone, which is one hell of a good one stop pick for the band and far superior to any best of or collection released of them. There's only one thing that sucks about it, it's inexplicably out of print.

Hmm...well I like 'em. Though I'd go with Ten over Vs, personally.

Purple by STP is probably my favorite album, I'd say.

Blind Melon's self-titled first album is probably my second choice. Its an absolutely amazing album, and it oughta be a staple in everyone's collection.

I remember playing the hell out that STP album when I first got it. I do still love it. Only problem is, it's cassette. Guess I need to go out and get the CD. Blind Melon is also a good one. Too bad the lead singer had to go and OD.

When my HD died I lost my copy of Pearl Jam live at the concert I saw. Sad day, I think I have it on CD kicking around somewhere.

One album for the rest of my days... Jesus Christ, I'd rather have my balls fed to me through a straw.

If it had to be just one, Guided by Voices - Under the Bushes, Under the Stars.

Though Iron & Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days might be a better choice based on name alone.
