DOZENS of the world’s cities, including London and New York, could be flooded by the end of the century, according to research which suggests that global warming will increase sea levels more rapidly than was previously thought.

The first study to combine computer models of rising temperatures with records of the ancient climate has indicated that sea levels could rise by up to 20ft (6m) by 2100, placing millions of people at risk.

oh how I envy my grand kids.

As for the flooding: should be pretty cool though I'm still not sold on this global warming thing...

What are you not sold on? There's an argument to be made that human behavior has had little or not effect on global warming*, but the fact that the planet is getting warmer isn't really up for debate.

There's a Time cover story pretty much saying that we're boned. Polar ice reflects heat and light while dark ocean waters absorb it. As more and more polar ice melts, we have more ocean waters to absorb heat which melts more polar ice and the cycle accelerates at an ever increasing rate.

*I don't think it's a good argument, but it's there

O, I agree. Let me correct myself. I really believe that we put too much power behind human actions. We didn't cause this - it's the natural flucuation of the world climate. We had an ice age once and came out of it. Since then we've been rising back towards a much warmer world climate and I believe if we make it past the heat some generation long in the future will feel another ice age.

I think that there is a considerable amount of evidence that human behavior is, in fact, contributing partially to the rising temperature.

I don't believe in global warming when I had to scrape half an inch of ice off my car this morning. And it's the end of March in the south.

Yet us northerly folk are out on our motorcycles enjoying nice sunny days (50 degrees your system).

The world is inverting.

I saw a program this weekend showing how they now believe that at least some areas (Britain in particular) will actually see a freezing effect because of global warming.

One of the major currents that warms the seas around Britain is driven by the salt water sinking but because the water is being diluted by melting glaciers, the current could stop altogether.

..except that the melting they predict is a gradual process, so folks wouldn't wake up to find their houses underwater.

Is this study trying to prove that the coasts are inhabited by the mentally deficient?

If you would like to succeed in that endeavor, I suggest that you work on getting your cholesterol levels down to around your IQ. Borderline ****** is like 100 right?

Actually, 100 is known to be the average IQ with the standard deviation at 10. This means that with your IQ, there are only about 2 people less intelligent out of every 100. Congratulations!

Maybe if you quit breeding with you family members, the genepool would be a little bit healthier. Luckily for me, I'm a genetically enhanced super-human free of your inbred genetics.

I think freshly fallen snow has the highest reflectivity rate of most anything found earthside; I saw a study a long time ago that measured changes in temperature of a snowy field versus an evergreen forest. The forest heated up faster because the trees (being darker) reflected less sunlight.

So to really slow global warming down, we can cut down all our trees and wrap the world in aluminum foil. I'm sure future generations will be grateful. :)

So basically it seems that us here in Florida are screwed in the next 50 years. Yep, time to buy a boat and start packing two of everything.. Then once the floodwaters reced I shall become owner of the world!! ...except for Australia.

this may be true.

but condider that as ice melts off the poles, that the rest of nature is going to keep on "doing it's thing". It may be the case that any flooding(ect) may manifest as violent weather patterns as nature tries to deal with these changes. So perhaps we'll be seeing situations like in New Orleans on a more global scale?

The point of the icecap issue is that it is exponential as more reflective ice is converted to absorptive water. We're not losing, to make up a number, 200sq miles of cap per year but rather 200 last year, 400 this year, 1600 next year, etc.

As I said, I made up the numbers and I don't know if the rate is truely SqMiles^2 per year, but you get my point.
