After a several hour long session of Wikipedia-surfing, I arrived upon the Hunter S. Thompson article that is widely-credited as being the first instance of "gonzo journalism" (in which the journalist, rather than remaining a passive observer, participates or even influences the events).

The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved

Pretty consistenly funny, and made me realize how closely Smash's stories mimicked Thompson's.

Get yourself a copy of "The Great SharkHunt" vol 1, it's filled with great stories like The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Deprived. My personal favorites are Memo From the Sports Desk: The So-Called "Jesus Freak" Scare, and Fear and Loathing at the Super Bowl.

Stange Tales From A Strange Time.

"Why in hell do you think we left the restaurant so fast?"

"I thought it was because of the Mace," he said.

"What Mace?"

He grinned. "When you shot it at the headwaiter, don't you remember?"

"Hell, that was nothing," I said. "I missed him...and we were leaving, anyway."
Just the conversation one might imagine after a night out with Smash. Smiley: lol

I always thought his Hells Angels story was the first instance of gonzo. It was published a few years before that article. That's a good one too, though. I've got a few of his collected works, don't think I have the Great Shark Hunt though.
