My Poor Ulnar NerveFollow

#1 Mar 24 2006 at 6:15 PM Rating: Decent
Hello,
First off this is my first post. I sit here at work and spend most of my day reading posts in the Asylum while I wait for my servers to play catch up. I enjoy every second of it :)
One thing I noticed above all else is a plethera of support on the most random of issues so I thought I would look for some help myself. I play far too many video games. Whether it is console-based or on pc, I play too much. About a month ago I started to notice numbing sensations in my left hand (dominate hand) more specifically in my pinky finger and spreading to my ring finger. I went to the doctor a week after it started and she told me she believe it is my Ulnar Nerve (right above the elbow on the inside of the arm). She told me that I just needed to rest and be mindful of not using it too much (which i am terrible at). Well, its been 3 weeks now, the numbness gets worse (feels like nerve dmg at times), and i am beginning to think this is a bit more serious and am becoming concerned. I was just looking for anyone who either A) has a 2nd "proffesional like" opinion, or b) has experience this type of thing themselves and have a little insight to offer. Please forgive me in advance if I have not posted this in the right place, as I said this is my first post :). Thank u!

Ulnar head of extensor carpi ulnaris

Muscle parts
Humeral head; Ulnar head
Latin name
Musculus extensor carpi ulnaris

Latin muscle parts
Caput humerale; Caput ulnare

Group
Antebrachial muscle - posterior compartment - lateral group

Etymology
In English this muscle's name is the muscle on the ulnar side that straightens the wrist. The word extensor comes from the Latin ex meaning "out from" and tendere meaning "to stretch."
Carpi is the genitive form of the Latin carpus meaning "wrist."
Ulnaris is used in reference to the muscle's position on the ulnar side of the forearm. This term comes from the Latin ulna meaning "elbow," which is derived from the Greek olene.

Origin
Lateral epicondyle of humerus via common extensor tendon and from the posterior border of the ulna

Insertion
Medial side of the base of the 5th metacarpal bone

Action
Extension of the wrist; adduction (ulnar deviation) of the wrist

Nerve supply
Radial nerve (C7 and C8)

Blood supply
The recurrent interosseous branch of the posterior interosseous artery and the posterior interosseous artery itself provide blood to the muscle.

or it could be one of the other following muscles:

Abductor digiti minimi
Dorsal interossei
Flexor carpi ulnaris
Flexor digiti minimi brevis
Flexor digitorum profundus
Lumbricals
Opponens digiti minimi
Palmar interossei

Of course I don't know what the hell I'm talking about.

I'm guessing you didn't follow the doctors orders very well. As a result I'm guessing there's a good chance you'll need surgery.

Go to a drugstore. Buy a wrist support made to help alleviate carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms. Wear every night when you go to sleep, not too tight. It should help alleviate what you suffer from as well.

You're welcome.

belated thanks to T. and Nobby, I feel the same way :(. So many folks use Carpal tunnel for LNI claims.

Yeah, that's carpal tunnel/repetetive stress. All too common these past few years with the overload of games and computers. You need to consciously take a break and flex the wrists a bit. I massage my forearms; that seems to help.

You have "****-Elbow" and have received shi[black][/black]tty medical advice for treating this wrist condition so far. Except for the one suggestion, that I'm going to make right now, to please stop yourself from furiously ************ before sepsis or gangrene sets in. I also recommend some cheap Vodka and Vicodin there's almost nothing that it can't cure.

Good Luck.

Sounds like Ulnar Neuropathy to me.

The ulnar nerve in your elbow has been damaged. There's no way to fix it, but over time, if you stop damaging it, it will restore itself.

I had it too. The third and fourth fingers on my hand felt like they fell asleep, but they never woke up. They stayed numb and tingly, and were usually colder than the rest of my hand.

You should probably have a nerve conduction test to determine the extent of the damage.

Nerves regenerate at a rate of about 1 inch per month according to my doctor, so it may take quite a while before your hand feels normal again.

Oh, and if you work with a keyboard at your job, you may be able to file for worker's compensation.

Good luck.
