I expect to see one of you on TVFollow

#1 Mar 23 2006 at 12:44 PM Rating: Good
CNN correspondent is asking for WoW players to contact her for an interview.

Quote:
"I am a producer at CNN and we are working on a story about gaming enthusiasts. We're looking for people who play EverQuest or WoW all day - everyday. Playing the game makes them happy."

"I'm not going to pretend to be an expert at WoW or EverQuest - nor will I pretend to know the first thing about what makes them so appealing and fascinating. That's what I'm hoping some of you can help me with. I'd ideally like to have a gamer 'show' my correspondent how the games work - have her experience the game with someone."

"We could talk to hundreds of 'experts' but those of you who play these games are far more interesting and informed - we want to speak with you and hear from you about these games and what makes them so addicting. What is it about them that make it hard for some people to do anything but play the games? I am looking for people who are hardcore players - I'd love to know about your gaming habits and how much time you devote to playing, perhaps at the cost of other aspects of your life."

"If you think you can help me with our story, or you know of someone else who might be willing to speak with me, please email me."

"I am also looking for any guidance on how CNN could possibly film in a gaming house - I'd be grateful for any advice. Many thanks - Sarah"

Quote:
"After reading the replies to my initial email I must say it is quite disheartening to realize that there is so little faith in the reputable, mainstream press. I do realize that there have been many 'sensational' stories done on the gaming industry in the past and all I can tell you is that this is NOT what we are attempting to do."

"I would hope that people would appreciate and be relieved with the fact that rather than CNN doing the obligatory interview with a 'gaming expert' or an 'addition doctor' who treats gamers, the gaming community would be happy hear that we want to talk to people who actually play these games themselves."

"Perhaps part of the reason so many people feel gamers have gotten a bad rap in the press and by the public, is because so few are willing to share your stories. It's hard to get to the truth of the matter when you can't talk to those who are most in the know."

"CNN is not '60 Minutes.' We are not trying to set up or expose anyone. We're not going to come into someone's home, who has graciously offered to share their story with us, and try to bamboozle them. I have worked on these types of stories for years and always approach them with the utmost respect and sensitivity."

"If you want those in the press and the millions of viewers who watch television to hear your side and understand your love the game, the best way to do that is to talk about it. I hope some of you understand where we are coming from. Yes, there have been some bad stories done, but there have been many good ones, too. Give us a chance. Thanks, Sarah"

I'll be on TV as long as I can wear the same loincloth as I do in WoW.

Do it man. You can make your own loincloth clothing line from the popularity (read humiliation) you'll receive.

Careful. Next they'll ask you to cash their check. That's how they got Twiz. Smiley: frown

No, Twiz got caught when he took his check to the bank and tried to turn it into 50 checks.

WoW is not "news", it's a human interest story. Human interest stories are only interesting when someone is getting screwed. Otherwise, there'd be a CNN crew here now asking me about this sandwich I'm eating for lunch.

There has? About gaming? Where?

Well, MMO players are often seen as closeted and antisocial (this is the "someone getting screwed part"). Perhaps she's trying to get a halfway intelligent person to disprove that view.

Hey, I'm trying to be optimistic here. It's not something I'm good at.

People aren't interested in finding out that I'm normal. People see normal all day long, they aren't looking to see more of it when they watch TV.

I'm sure CNN will do better than Ben Stein blaming his poor parenting skills on Everquest but I doubt this piece will be a warm outreach of shared humanity.

I just sent her a link to the WoW General Forum. Presumably she'll at least lose interest in the story, and with luck her will to live!

I left out one of the most relevent lines:
"We're looking for people who play EverQuest or WoW all day - everyday."

This is not a woman looking for normal, well-adjusted representatives from the gaming community to chat on about why they enjoy MMORPGs. This is someone looking to find people who have let gaming consume their lives and watch them try to explain why pretending to be a wizard is more important than work, school and family.

I've got the perfect candidate.

Call me a *******, but I would find this entertaining. If nothing else it could prove as a wakeup call to those that are letting the game influence them that much.

But you can see where that don't jive with:

Indeed I can. Don't get me wrong, I'm just as suspicious about it as the next person...but I still think it's an interesting opportunity.

Some of us are not pimple faced assclowns anymore, so it's not like the story would necessarily be the exploitation of some poor teenager. I think there are capable people here that could appear in an interview and direct it towards a positive - or at least less negative - light.

I saw a couple of the WoW music videos you guys did awhile back, and they were hilarious and extremely creative. That's the face of a gamer I'd like to see on the news.

I e-mailed her. I'm probably the closest thing to an acnowledged expert in these games as there is. However, in the past, reporters have found me too normal to use in their pieces. Husband, father and successful businessman who also plays games is not as compelling as the one kid out of the multi-million gamers who killed himself while playing a game, or Ben Stein's kid - ignored and sent off to bording school - playing Everquest far more than his dad thinks he should, or the cold, disinterested wife who blames video games on the breakup of her marriage rather than her own failings.

Success never makes for a good story. People take pleasure in other's pain and suffering. Just look at what sells on tv, sex and violence.

My husband's in the military and most military members play video games (it's a good way to pass the time when you're on a boat for 6 months). There was one sailor on the base I heard about that got into FFXI so deeply that he ended up getting in some serious trouble because his gaming interfered with his military duties. Smiley: oyvey

One of my cousins and her husband owned a gaming lounge in San Diego and they would tell me stories of how one kid would be at their shop from the moment it opened to the moment it closed up for the night. When they came back the next morning to open up, they found the kid sleeping in his car. Apparently, he spent the night in the parking lot to make sure he got his space in the lounge. Smiley: disappointed

but those are the stories that the media sniffs out Thumb, which is why there is so much caution towards these so called innocent interviews. Like Alla said, they dont want to hear about the normal people, who actually know how to balance life and gaming. They want the people who play every day all day and it becomes more of an obsession than a way to relax with friends

Christ, if we did that they would have a panel of psychologists talking about how deranged and perverted the gaming community at large is.

I gotta agree with Joph, this is a hatchet job in the works.
