A man walking the USA from coast to coastFollow

Quote:
It began as an unheralded coast-to-coast walk designed to help morbidly obese Steve Vaught lose weight.

But some 2,300 miles (3,700km) into his journey, the former US marine now has a book deal and a 700,000-hits-a-month website, and has been interviewed by Oprah

Steve's three miles-per-hour journey through the back roads of this vast and varied country began last April in southern California, when he weighed almost 30 stone (190kg).

Quote:
Today Steve has lost 114lbs (eight stone, 52kg) and has less than 600 miles - about six weeks - to reach his goal, Rockefeller Plaza in New York City

Now its no surprise he lost weight and also no surprise to read:

Quote:
When he left San Diego last April, he passed 21 fast food restaurants in a four-and-a-half mile stretch of road.

"But I've walked through the Midwest, the breadbasket, and it is one of the most unhealthy places on earth.

"You have all these rolling acres of farmland, and you can't even buy fresh fruit and veg. The last apple I ate came from South America - and it looked like it had rolled here."

Reminds me of a recent trip through the UK, I had similar thoughts about the food on offer to people driving/walking long trips ...

How much recognition is he gaining in the US. Is he making an impact or is this just an interest story. Enquiring Brits would love to know! Smiley: smile

First I had heard of it, although a couple I know walked all up the west cost, from the Mexico to the Canadian border.

We'll just see him as a Forrest Gump copier and scoff. This is the first I've heard of it.

How does a marine allow himself to get so fat in the first place? Where's his discipline?

Last year, this guy walked from Arizona to Wrigley Field, Chicago to raise money for juvenile diabetes research.

(Former player and current Cubs broadcaster Ron Santo has lost both legs to diabetes, and has raised over $50 mill for JDRF).

I've heard of him but only because he came close to my town and there was nothing else worth reporting. Like stated before it's been done and for more charitable reasons.

And here's me, considering doing that for no real reason except to see the world a bit. Never thought something so mundane would spark news. I would've thought more than one person a year decides to walk cross country...

Go figure.

There's a memoir from sone guy who walked the N/S length of the nation along the eastern side. Be damned if I remember his name but I read the book in 8th grade so this was a good long while ago. At the time, he was planning an E/W trek across the nation as well.

But after leaving the marines, he was involved in a car crash in which two people died, and this sent him into a spiral of depression and overeating.

If he was a real marine, he would have turned into a superhero that fights against irresponsible driving. I don't buy it.

Wow, Forest Gump.
Never thought that I'd hear about that kid ever again. I ran with him 3 quarters of the way, but I had to settle down when my calf exploded. It took out 4 other guys...
In retrospect, I probably should not have eaten that fillet-o-fish from McDonalds.
