I've been sitting here reading movie reviews of V for Vendetta with eager anticipation. See, I'm what you call an Alan Moore fan boy and as such I will be seeing this film adaptation of V asap. (Hopefully it will live up, in part, to the graphic novel)

As I read the reviews I noticed that most of the reviewers were really upset with a scene in which a certain important British Government building is blown up. One went so far as to say the act of terrorism (even if justified) was not appropriate for our post-9/11 world. Are acts of revolution and terror to incite revolution in movies really that objectional and controversial?

Another reviewer claims the movie points fingers and warns people of a "Bush administration run amok." Is that guy really dumb enough to write that the movie is based on source material from 20 years ago and in the same article claim it's a seething response to our current conservative government?

I hate it when I read reviews before I see a movie; I always get so worked up about them.

I hope you're aware that Moore is very unhappy with how it came out and withdrew his blessing and all that from it. Of course, I don't really care, having not read them. At any rate, it sounds as though you may want to try to move away (mentally) from the novels before seeing it.

I've got nothing riding on the movie being even half of what the GN is but I hope its at least relatively good.

I know that Moore isn't happy with the movie but the guy wouldn't be happy if you told him that the sun will come up tomorrow. He is as eccentric as the ocean is wet.

well i never read the book, but saw the movie yesterday and have to say some of the fight scenes were well done, the acting was questionable at best, V is hot looking, and the over all story line is very simular to Aeon Flux in general concept.

in all its worth watching 1 time, but doubt ill add it to my collection.

I read an article today with Ms. Portman saying she enjoyed having her head shaved because she was defying the male stereotypes of beauty or some such crap.

Sister, the reason you have a job is due to the male stereotypes of beauty, hair or no hair. Do you honestly think you'd have been cast for your acting chops if you were obese with bad skin?

I have nothing to add about the movie itself

I do remember her shaking her *** a bit in that film. I still don't think she'd have landed the part or an award if she was obese and pock-marked Smiley: laugh

I'd be in favor of him moving away (mentally) from everything, just saying.

Don't think I'm a Moore hater, I love his work on Promethea and Top 10 was amazing. I still read the old Swamp Things Miraclemans and of course I have a hardcover of watchman on my bookself. Saying all that, the man is insane. He hands back royality checks for things hes written 10 yrs ago that he no longer thinks are any good. He believes that killing joke is the worse thing hes ever written and that it destroyed who the joker was. He's afraid to leave his house because "they" are after him. Just look at him, this is not a well man, but a well man could not write Promethea.

Clichéd and unoriginal are the first words that come to my mind after seeing the movie.

The acting is just terrible. Natalie Portman once again shamelessly displays how much of a s'hitty actress she is in general. Her typical routine of being the little, adorable lover is getting old considering she was probably starring in the movie to hopefully secure a safe spot in the box office. And that poorly developed charcater - the masked "hero": his dialogue is weak, provides no sense of depth and never justifies his actions beyond the idea of petty vengeance. Well, the movie is called Vendetta, but still.

The plot blows. There's nothing anyone who can critically analyze the infrastructures of governmental institutions doesn't know.

This is just another one of those movies that dumbs down the issues Orwell's 1984 so brilliantly elaborates on. It's made for high school students and idiots in general who think that after seeing this movie, it'll give them a better understanding about the fundamentals evil of society.

Keep looking, there's nothing to see in this pile of utter s'hit.

Natalie Portman's fake British accent was absolute ********* A bloody disgrace. Wretched. Simply dreadful.

Right then.

and the movie was good, but not great. Hugo Weaving and John Hurt were excellent.

I think it was probobly as good an adaption of the source material as possible. Saw it just last night.

The Good:

The "twist". I almost thought it'd be "too much" for the movie version. However, it was every bit as shocking to the movie goers as it was for me when I read it years ago. However, while there were quite a few hints, the collective "ghasps" and "what the hell's?" I heard from everyone around me meant that the vast majority of the people didn't pick up on it.

Natalie Portman in little school girl outfit. Mmmmmm

The Dialogue. Ya, the frequent and almost improper use of "bollucks" was frustrating at times, but for the most part it stuck to Alan Moore's style of victorianesque "old english" writing.

V. The mask was great and they really nailed the charachter.

Updating it for current times. This novel was started in the early 80's and finished in the late 80's. The sotry took place in 1998 in the novel. I think they did a pretty good job
updating it and using current events ("America's war") instead of the source material (which was Germany winning WWII and nucular holocaust killing pretty much everyone but England)

The Bad:

It almost seemed that the "Matrix" style fight scenes were forced. Just because you can make cool special effects shots doesn't necissarily mean you should. However, my roomy thought these were the only redeaming qualities of the flick (besides the aforementioned Natalie Portman/schoolgirl outfit)

The people I were with didn't get the referances to "the fingers", which means the tools of this totalitarian government (which in the novel are eyes, voice, ears, fingers etc.) weren't properly fleshed out. I got it, but if you hadn't read it, you may not have.

No mention of Anarchy whatsover. The whole point of the book isn't the Vendetta, it isn't just waking up the people to the realities of their totalitarian society, and it isn't just about overthrowing said totalitarian government: it's about putting the power back in the hands of the people and having them govern themselves willingly.

"People should not be afraid of their Governments, Governments should be afraid of their people".

Good flick, B+

QFT. I saw it last night, the acting was decent, the fight scenes were good too. V was a truly awesome character, he had it all (except for looks...he was all burned and creepy).
