If there was a bomb about to blow up a bunch of people and you had a person who knows where it is and how to defuse it; should you torture them to get the information?

No, you shoot the person in the head, and then scan the radio frequencies a bombs control would use to transmit signals. If that fails, you just search for odd vibrations.

If you don't have the equipment at hand, you just have the people run like hell. But still shoot the guy in the head.

Does the person speak English?
Are they cooperative?
Do you have the person in custody?
Are you a member of Law Enforcement?
Do you know any of the people that would be killed?
Is it your cheating spouse that could be a victim?
Is it your cheating spouse that planted the bomb?
Is the person Arabian, Latino, European, Black, Orange, Yellow?
Do you know how to defuse the bomb?
If there is enough time to defuse the bomb why not evacuate the area?

Those are the first 10 questions that come up before I torture the person.

Half of those questions ar irrelevant.

OK, say it was Shae Stadium, full seats.. and the guy was Al Quada.

You shoot yourself in the face so you don't have to worry about the ********* because the guy isn't going to talk even if you torture him.

Personally I have no issue with torture or commonly defined "cruel and unusual" punishments. Hell yeah, I would. But mostly just because I could, not because it would be likely to produce meaningful information.

ok, he's not Al Quada...

He's some random ******* guy from where ever.looking like this http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/uf/WarMaverick/Me.jpg. and you know he fears death. and it's a special non-detectable bomb.

So how far from the stadium are you? DO you have enough time to get there and difuse the bomb? If you are there do you have the tools to disarm the bomb? What kind of special undetectable bomb is it?

I mean is there really a point in torturing him and why does it have to be a him? Maybe it could be a her, then there are even more moral questions.

Geez that's a ****** up question you asked.

You don't cross the line, ever, even if international law permits.

That said, if some commander shoots his gun into the ground to intimidate a suspect that ends up revealing information that saves the lives of his troops, you punish him but don't throw the book at him. Sometimes what's legally wrong is morally right.

No, because you're not more likely to get the information using torture. Your question presumes that torture is more likely to extract information from an interrorgation suspect than not using torture which isn't now, and never has been, true.

Justified is a pointless term. Torture might be justified if it was an effective technique to extract information. Being as it isn't, it's a pointless question.

You didn't answer my questions though. And now more important than the others, why does it always have to be a guy, why can't we torture the women too?

Sure it is. It's justified all the time by people who choose to practice it. In their own minds they feel perfectly justified in their actions.
#19 Jun 17 2004 at 8:33 AM Rating: Excellent
That just means they're ****** doesn't it? Perhaps the mad bomber is really a ********* and he might like being tortured so that is why he planted the bomb?

Or maybe... He's a ****** who wants the person to think he's a *********, thus causing an endless dilema in the interrogators head.

Oh wow this is one of those deep questions, like what is the meaning of life.

I could see justifying torture on people who ask dumb questions and use large bold text.

Especially FFXI players
