Everyone always says "The book was better than the movie." Well I was trying to think of exceptions to this, and I couldn't really come up with any. (Of course it would help if I read more books).

One possibility I came up with is "Hunt for the Red October." Although I've never read the book, Tom Clancy's works aren't exactly masterpieces.

"Wizard of Oz" is perhaps another example, or maybe "Gone with the Wind" in that same year of 1939.

Anybody else?

Well 'The lost boys' was an adaptation of 'Peter Pan' does that count?

While not movies the 'Sharpe' Series based on Bernard Corwells books where much better but that was due to Sean Beans presence on screen that the charicter never really had in the books.

Other than that not many come to mind.

My vote is "Fight Club". The book was good, don't get me wrong. But the movie was amazing.

Blade Runner - Based on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by PKD - er Phillip K ****.

The movie is kind of based on the book - similar plot lines, and characters, but the movie just took the story to a whole new depth of development and level of violence that **** would never put in his novels, but fit the story wonderfully.

I'd also recommend the director's cut of Blade Runner rather than the regular theatrical release.

Though Blade Runner was a good movie, I'll have to disagree. The book was alot better. I don't know if this counts but Shawshank Redemtion was a killer movie, even though it only comes from a Stephen King short story.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Also, "Stand By Me" was a really good film based on an ok Stephen King short story "The Body."

Honestly, I have enjoyed most of the movies based on Steven King books more than the books themselves.

Some were crappy in both incarnations though. Pet Cemetary for example.

Now Carrie, that's a movie!

Grrr... I hate admitting this. I am hooked on the HP series. I hate the third movie though.. totally twists, warps, and other wise trashes a perfectly good book.

Don't say a word.

That's the title of the movie with Michael Douglas and Cat.Z.Jones, right?

You die. Now ;). Tom Clancy's books are the very best in the genre, hands down. They might not be great novels for the ages, but they are damned good reads. I've read almost every book in the military/intelligence fiction genre, at least the ones that are based on real happenings, and all of them pale in comparison to Clancy's work.

Edit: Take out Sean Connery, and the book is 10x better than the movie. Connery is great in all films, and make them better just because he's in them

Speaking of Stephen King books made into movies... my vote for "Movie from a book that had the least amount to actually do with the book" has to go to Lawnmower Man. Ok yeah, there's about 5 minutes in the movie that is actually the short story itself. But the rest of it... :insert Kramer "way out there" move:

The Shining was the best movie made from a Stphen King book. Much better than the book and so diffrent King promised never to option another bok after it came out.

Obviously he rethought that...

Kubrik's definately in my top 5.

Kurosawa, Orson Wells, Kubrik, Felini, and Hitchcock in no particular order.

Nobody's Fool, starring Paul Newman, Bruce Willis and Jessica Tandy's last role, is a very good movie from an excellent novel by Richard Russo.

Personally, I say the original Dune movie was much better then the book, after seeing the movie once I knew what a "Weirding module" was, but reading the book the first time, even the second, it seemed that the "Wierding" used in the book was nothing more then a greenhouse, yet was also some form of weapon.
Then when I tried to read the second book I couldn't get past the way he seemed to go from free the people and help them, to everyone will be under my heel.... or maybe it was just his people, but he seemed to support that in them.

I also agree that Blade Runner was great, though I truly recommend watching both versions, the original was darker in some ways, while the "unicorn" version had it's darkness as well.

WHAT!?

Dune the books own the movies. There is you can put all of the themes, information, and subtleties from the book into a film.
