Hell yes they are addictive. Any form of entertainment that one becomes used to or reliant upon is gratifying and addictive. We are hedonistic retches who deserve to pay for our sins. So...in that case orgiastic debauchery party at my place.

Of course they're addictive. Why is this even a debate?

Quit smoking.

Then quit a_random_video_game.

or even #a_really_good_video_game00.

Then tell me which is addictive.

Feel free to substitute heroine, methamphetamine, and a host of others for cigarettes, if you're not the sort of person who gets addicted to them.

Video games, heck most drugs are not addictive. They're compelling to people who like to escape, but they are not addictive.

They're addictive. Physical addiciton isn't the only type of addiciton that exists. People quit smoking for ten years and then start again. Why? Because they're still physically addicted to smoking?

Those are chemically and psychologically addictive, mang. Vidoe games are more...shall we say...habitually redundant and addictive none the less.

No need to use physical with addiction, they are one and the same.

Having been through the ringer of addiction therapy a few times, not for me, not recently, I can happily say without a doubt that everything is addictive.

Sitting in chairs is, walking is, driving, sipping water, posting on messageboards, eating, falling down, picking one's nose.

But if everything is addictive, what's the point of the word? to warn that everything might be habit forming? the Modern addiction therapy industry likes to tag all sorts of habit forming things as addictive.

News flash: EVERYTHING might be habit forming

Very few things result in addiction for the mass of people. Nicotine, heroine, and a few others are well documented to cause the physical signs relating to addiction in most people.

If I had a smoke tomorrow, it wouldn't be a result of addiction, the 20 that followed would be highly related to addiction.

yes, yes they are. but so are the following;

cars,
clothing,
music,
sport,
curry,

in fact anything that you particularly like to do is almost definetly addictive in some sense.

the word was invented so people can say, "i may do this, but regardless of the fact you're better than me at it, i come out on top because the extra effort you put in clearly means you're addicted"

I've found that I am addicted to beautiful women... especially redheads, asian, latino, blondes, and the occassional Goth girl.

But this is one addiction I don't ever plan on giving up.

For all the other addictions, uhm I don't ever plan on giving those up either. Sad thing is I'm addicted to this forum and some of you really suck. ;)

There are some addictions that more benevolent than others, there are some addictions that are malevolent, over the course of the evolution of society and culture, certain habits have been condoned, while others have been discouraged. It just so happens that the addictions that are encouraged benefits others; especially those who govern. The point of life is to develope and cultivate goodness in one's self while defining "goodness".

A jar of strawberry jam told this while I was on acid.

So it's your contention that sitting in a chair is equally likely to impact a kid in college's grades as playing an MMORPG is?

I don't understand the big fear here. No one's going to outlaw video games. They are clearly more addictive than watching televison, sitting in a chiar, or whatever.

I know people, and I imagine anyone who plays at a high level in any MMORPG does too, who's lives have been severly impacted by playing. People drop out of school, lose jobs, end relationships, whatever. Things that don't happen because they watch TV.

Most people can play MMORPG's and live a normal happy productive life. Most people can have a few beers and live a normal happy productive life. Some people become alcholocis, some people get addicted to video games.

Get over it, no one's going to take your games away, pretneding there's no addictive potential to them is just denying the obvious for no particularly good reason.
