Raise minimum wage and kill small business

As a small start up business owner I must say that if the minimum wage was to be raised to $8.00 an hour that it would be very difficult to survive. Don't get me wrong, I truly want to pay my employees better than $6.00 an hour but that would really break the bank. As it is in the first year of starting out paying myself is barely above minimum wage at $5.15 an hour. I thought Nader was smarter than this. I could be wrong, did he serve in the military ;)

You should have had more children Stok. Then you could get around paying them at all!

There's a federal MW and then individual state MW and exemptions. Like you don't have pay the 14 year old who bales hay at your farm MW etc.

$7.16 in Washinton State is around the highest. There are a few other states with ~$7 rates.

Fortunately Stok lives in Exploit the Worker land, pardon me, Texas which has a $5.15 rate and the most exemptions.

And some wonder why people in Russia, India, Italy, Australia, China.......are being hired while Washington has the 5th highest unemployment rate in 2003 and the third highest in 2004.

Keep in mind also that many workers who earn at or near minimum wage also qualify for state/federal aid (food stamps, etc.).

Through our tax dollars we are subsidising those employers who are not paying a living wage.

I feel really warm and fuzzy knowing some of my tax dollars are helping Walmart with their employee costs.

I'm from Washington State, I currently live in texas. I've only been here for about a year and a half. And it is a god forsaken place with no trees. I miss trees. That and mountains. a decent volcanic eruption would really liven this place up.

There are a couple other people from washington here, I don't belive Stok is one of them if I remember correctly.

Kaolain

I moved to Salt Lake for one year and know exactly how you feel. Trees and vegetation were severely lacking there. Combine that with extreme climates there vs mild enjoyable climates here and you've got one of the most beautiful places in the U.S.A. to live. Granted it's really tough to compete with the central east coast during the fall but for overall year around nice places to live.....the pacific northwest is great.

Yea yea yea, so it rains here ALOT but some of us have had web feet since before moving up here.

BTW....I live 15 minutes from the Space Needle. :)

California has, I think, $6.75 minimum wage.

SF has $8.50.

Eb

San Francisco Ordinance (Applicable to employees who work 2 or more hours a week. Rate will not apply to businesses with fewer than 10 employees or non-profits until January 1, 2005.)

And you can get a charming studio with a shared bathroom in SF for about $1900 a month. The MW in SF should be $30.

Heh. Brilliant. Lets see. Rental businesses in SF have taken a beating in the last year, with overall business dropping by like 6%. I found studios in "nice" parts of the city for less then 1k a month.

Given that only the more expensive places advertise on the web, I'm sure that if I were living in SF I could probably find a single for around 600-700 a month in the local paper.

Minimum wage is not supposed to allow you to rent a single place by yourself in a posh part of town Smash. Minimum wage should allow you enough money to feed and cloth yourself and maybe help your parents out with rent, or join in on rent with a roomate or three. There's a reason it's called "minimum" wage...

$30 an hour would be a tad excessive. I might, just might, lead to inflation or something. It'd be a hell of a first weekend though before gas was $18 a gallon on the following Monday. I think we could easily sustain a $12 MW nationwide with government assitance to small buisness owners.

But then, that's why I'm a Socialist.
