you must be conscious of what the symbol means to others in an offensive way.
This is a great statement for those of you that are able to step, however briefly, into someone else's shoes. Now my parents came here legally, paid my own way through schools without any scholarships, I never dealt with "la migra" and all that being an illegal alien entails,
but because of my skin color and features I still enjoy the occasional "beaner" reference, or the always witty allusions to cutting lawns and stealing jobs.
It truly sucks to be boxed into a stereotype of your culture, but sometimes by condoning behaviors that support these views (even if you don't mean to encourage them) you are contributing to every person who has a negative assumption to make based on someone's sex, race, nationality, or sexual orientation. Most people in middle America find it easy to swallow stereotypes because they don't frequent other cultures. Hell, before I came from South America I was convinced everyone was cinnamon-colored, Catholic and straight. Imagine my surprise when I arrived in "Chocolate City."
Take it as an opportunity to learn. The same things that **** you off about being thought of as an ignorant cracker are the ones that **** off every person of color that has ever had to come to the realization that for some folk, negative assumptions are all they can ever expect. I'm not saying you can change the world, but the fact that you care enough to see all sides of this issue speaks volumes for the invalidity of your Seargant's assumption.
