Lol, no, seriously, they both have one odd thing in common, it has to do with the crazy english language.

I know that nothing rhymes with orange. I can't think of anything special about the word newt though.

I'd like to keep this question open until Thundra and/or Totem come on, they might know, but if it really bugs you and they don't log on for awhile I'll tell ya.

Hmm is it something to do with how the vowels are pronounced in those words?

Nope, but your kind of on the right track. You'd need to know the history of the words to know the answer.

#9 May 23 2004 at 7:22 PM Rating: Decent
They're both unrhymable?
#11 May 23 2004 at 7:27 PM Rating: Good
Nope.

Orange

ETYMOLOGY: Middle English, from Old French pume orenge, translation and alteration (influenced by Orenge, Orange, a town in France) of Old Italian melarancio : mela, fruit + arancio, orange tree (alteration of Arabic nranj, from Persian nrang, from Sanskrit nraga, possibly of Dravidian origin).

Quote:

Newt

ETYMOLOGY: Middle English neute, from a neute, alteration of an eute, variant of evete, from Old English efete.

Hmmm...that doesn't help at all.
#13 May 23 2004 at 7:35 PM Rating: Good
Lol.

That's just part of their history. There is more to it than that.

Technically, Orange should have an N at the beginning, but it was lost in its transfer to English.

Technically, Newt shouldn't have an N at the beginning, but it was added in its transfer to Modern English.

So they should really be "Norange" and "Ewt."

Newt races are funny. In Tilamook oregon there is a big stream that runs down to the beach, with a colony of newts living in it, so you can build a track (complete with sandcastles, put newts at one end, and let them run to the water. Much fun.

Correct sir.

It used to be "A norange" and "an ewt".

You now have 5 "catch phrase" points.

Redeemable for any "Bam!", "to the extreme", "Your dumb, you morans", or any other Allakhazam catch phrase.

Each one costs 1 point.

Enjoy!

Don't use them all in one post!

This is easy.

What oranges and newts have in common is that these are items nautical witches took with them on sea voyages. While that may not be readily apparent, it makes sense when you think about it. The oranges prevented scurvy-- something fairly important to witches since they already are ugly and scurvy would just make them even more so, not to mention that a little orange juice made some of the more unpalatable potions they brewed up drinkable.

Newts, well, everyone knows that witches can't do anything without some kind of newt thrown in to the mix. Potion of newt (sweetened with a little oj), newt dust, crushed newt, ground newt, abstract of newt, newt oil, newt powder, newt jelly, newt... well, you get the idea.

See? Easy question.

You want a harder question? Try this: What do Flea and Skeeter have in common? I dunno either. She took on a charity case as best as I can tell.

Hell no. I'd never let any Newt in me. However the town where I was born is famous for two things, and one of them is that most of the women are witches.
