For all the old timers that I've known - I got a great job back east in Columbia, Maryland and I'll be leaving San Francisco a week from today. We have been flying back and forth to Maryland the last few weeks and on our last trip we bought a house in Westminster. We get to move in towards the end of June - my wife will be staying with her family in SF until then while I stay with my relatives as I start work May 24th.

Anyhoo, looking forward to our new home and it would be great to hook up with some of you east coasters some time for dinner, drinks or golf (we have a great course near our new house).

We'll miss our family and friends in San Francisco, the Giants (well, I grew up an Orioles fan, so it's just back to the other black and orange team!), and the bay area, but we sure as hell won't miss the godawful housing prices out here!

Btw, love the new Asylum board, perfect fit for the loonies here.

Columbia is ******** high priced, but ******** I used to live there. Who are you going to be working for?

However, Westminster, I would say sucks. There are nice areas but did you know at one pt. Westminster MD had the highest heroin use per capita (granted, small population skews the chart) anywhere?

I'll be working for a pre-IPO startup (that may be redundant, heh) called Sourcefire. Look to be great folks that I'll be happy to work alongside. Even if the company runs into problems later, the job market is quite decent for what I do (technical writer) in the area.

We feel differently about Westminster - but then, we wanted a nice, quiet, boring suburban life. It's a charming college town (McDaniel College - formerly known as Western Maryland College). We just missed their jazz festival (have to check that out next year) and we look forward to the many restaurants, antique shops, as well as Baltimore, Annapolis and Washington D.C. (I grew up in Gaithersburg, MD - I'm coming back to Maryland after 15 years). I'm especially looking forward to the great seafood.

Columbia Mall is a gift from GOD! Compared to the chics at Laurel Mall, I'm shocked that its even the same state.

That and P.F. Changs and those Lettuce Wraps...mmmmmhmm.

Hey Kelvy....How can they call it "The City That Reads" when the literacy rate is like 25% in areas. I thought they changed it to "The Greatest City in the World" or some other ******** statement.

Congratulations Bawdy!

California will miss you, but I agree that the Bay area has much too high an opinion of itself. It's a nice area, but it's not THAT nice, lol.

Hope everything is well, and that Maryland takes care of my favorite dwarf! Smiley: yippee

Thanks all! Smiley: smile The biggest downside of course, will be stuck on a 56k modem at my Uncle's house for a month! Doh! Smiley: yikes

Well, that and future winters - I am the biggest wuss when it comes to cold weather. My friends back east are getting us a snow shovel as a house-warming gift...the bastards! Smiley: glare

Speaking of which, that pic was taken during the past winter - the lawn is full and green. I look forward to mowing the lawn and making friends with our neighbors who have an in-ground swimming pool - muhahahaha!

Welcome back to Maryland. Just hope you like the bumper to bumper traffic on Rt 32.

Columbia Mall Rocks! I was one of the first Columbia Mall Rats back in the '70s. Laurel Mall always sucked. White Marsh is my favorite Mall in the Baltimore area though as I love Ikea. For Movies though you can't beat Muvico Egyptian 24 at Arundel Mills.

If ya got kids, Columbia is the place to live. I was heart broken when my parents sold our home in Thunderhill.

There are places in Baltimore that being white you may stand out, but rarely have people been hostil to me in all the years I've live in Baltimore. I've lived in the city since '88 and back in the late 70's went to college at MICA for 2 years and always found most folks friendly.

It's really the biggest small town since it seems everyone is knows someone you already are friends with. Just avoid places were you see rats corpses. I just can't stand rats since they dug into my last house.

Welcome to our side of the island. Winters in the greater D.C. area do suck, and people here stare at raindrops, puppies, accidents, anything to delay traffic and street cleanups are of the poorest quality... But every spring after a long winter and a grey week of rain, when everything explodes into green you fall in love all over again. At least for a month or so until it gets so hot and muggy you think you're swimming.

Congratulations, Smoggy- although now that you will become a Maryland driver I will be praying daily for your death and/or dismemberment.

at least he won't be a DC driver.

And Muvico is the bestest theater around, by far. Well, the Loews in Bowie is pretty good too, but Muvico beats it.

I heard they are widening the road in the near future. Luckily, I have flexible hours so I can either leave earlier or wait to leave after the heavy commuting times.

We drove by Muvico a few times during our trip back there. We wondered what that was. Good to know, thanks!

Well, Totem, it was either buy something relatively cheap in SF for $500k (I couldn't directly link the realtor.com page due to the 250 character filter here, so if you want to verify this, do a search for this MLS number on realtor.com - 262244 or, simply do a home search for San Francisco between 300k and 500k), or buy our new home in Maryland for $334k.

Like California, Maryland has it's awesome areas and not-so-awesome areas. Also, Maryland is my home state. I look forward to being near my family and friends there after a 15-year absence.

Amazingly, I only took about a 10k/year pay cut. I come out ahead, regardless. Maybe one day the SF Bay area housing bubble will burst (doubtful - it is too popular an area, after all) but even then the housing prices will only level off, not drop.
