I watched a documentary on Area 51 last weekend that was quite interesting and somewhat spooky. I am curious to hear your ideas on what this fabled "area" might be used for. In the program it was hypothesized that the base is a weapons testing site or a aircraft testing sight, though neither can be proved. And what about that "alien autopsy"?

I just wonder how much the average American person knows about Area 51 and the purpose of the base, or if mostly no one gives a rat's **** what it is. Maybe it's all a big Hollywood reality series that will be aired on Fox this summer.

Thoughts?

Advanced research and development. The alien autopsy (are we talking about the one aired on Fox?) was a fake, and a badly done one at that.

How wishy-washy is that, Totem? Reserach into what? Development of what? Enquiring minds want to know - in fact, that's where I read about the alien autopsy. Haha!

Hypersonic aircraft mostly, probably a few weapons and radar systems too.

My understanding is that the R&D, while not focused exclusively on aeronautics, has a tendancy towards that due to the airspace restrictions around it. Many of the airframes in recent memory have had their in-flight data gathering phase completed in the Groom Lake/Area 51 areas.

I think it is where the aliens do autopsies on humans. There already here!!!!! If not this, then it is where an entire segment of the defense department became soo lazy that they decided to make a top secret area where they could ***** the pooch in private.

Even with the FOIA it's hard for the average civillian to understand just how secret cutting edge military technology actually is. We had stealth fighters in the seventies. You can't go building those in Palmdale, CA.

I don't know what's being developed there now, but if you put a gun to my head I'd say hypersonic armed UAVs.

I'd have to agree. I too, think it's for advanced R&D.

Who knows really, Flea could be right.

Who would know how to throw a sick party better than our own government.

Bastids.

Can you dumb this down for me, Smash?

What's that mean to the lay-person?

Hypersonic armed UAVs are extremely fast (ten times or faster than the speed of sound) unmanned flying machines, which presumably would have a weapon system attached to it. The proof of concept aircraft just flew a couple of weeks ago.

What Totem said. The "blue sky" theory for them is that you'd build a big railgun that would let you launch them at 1000+ Gs (which you obviously can't do with manned vehicles) and have the ability to put them pretty much anywhere on the globe in a matter of hours or minutes with very little fuel or power expenditure.

There are public sector railguns that can propel very small projectiles at ~4KM/second right now so who knows where the military is with that or gaus tech. Anyway, you'd need a whole new engineering theory to build things that could withstand that sort of G force regardless of if you launch them or if they just take off from a landing strip.

The only things currently that withstand that sort of acceration force are USAF coffee machines.

Yes. But from what I hear, only after a few years of use. It's something about the molecular bonding of the coffee "slurry" that makes them resiliant to any known force in the universe...

At least that's what I've heard. But then my source was a semi-crazy guy who used to ride shotgun on nukes and had some pretty scary stories to tell. Did you know that you could bypass the "two key" launch system by essentially using the same technique one might use to jump the solenoid on a car? Spooky...

Before they went full PAL on all the nukes some of them were literally secured with padlocks. All that was before my time, naturally. Allthough when I stationed at Tinker when I was lad there was allways some old timer talking about nutty Curtis Lemay was and how we almost dropped nukes on the USSR like 100 times.

Just working in Intel for the past 3 years I would say that Area-51 USED to be something interesting. But now is really nothing other then a normal air base with maybe bomb testing zones and same ole stuff you would find at Fort Huachuca just south of it. If there is anything interesting going on, it ain't going down there.

Classified weapons research and development. Groom Dry Lake is about the best secluded air strip you could ask for. Most notable product that was developed there is the F-117A Nighthawk (ie the Stealth Fighter).

It's not obviously anything the whole point is no one except people with acsess can know. Hell the could be deveploping laser weapons sure but equally it could be a conspirisy theoryist's wet dream but you or i Will probably never know.

When people don't know they make **** up.

Besides the back teching theoery is attually quiet sound IF you believe in UFO's /Roswell ,which was never explained very well <note i did not say it was a UFO just that the USAF ****** the story up, not unusual the Airforce are the 'make up the numbers' arm of the forces and attract a fair number of village idiots at the officer level.>

oh well we can't all be in the senior service can we......

/em waits to see if he hooks any big fish......
