Why in the name of God would anyone pay real money for items inside a game? I’m not complaining mind you, I made a killing when I quit EQ recently to but the question still haunts me…why?

Do you buy things for EQ or what ever other game you play?

Why?

Patrician made a good point about this once. That people who would never dream of paying $20 for an EQ item (Like me, I can't even picture it) would spend 10 hours camping it. Effectively "working" for $2 an hour.

There's a certain logic to that.

Straight. **** off and let me post. It's not true, it's all in good fun. Now go away.

My husband bought an account once (I didn't want him to). He said it was because he didn't have the patience to get his toon to a higher level and he felt like he'd have more fun if he could just get to the higher stuff.

Well, he got there, and the higher end game bored him even more than the mid-level game, so he sold his bought account and quit EQ, hehe. He's just not really a MMORPG kinda guy. He likes the idea of it, but he just doesn't have the personality for it.

Wow, I kinda rambled a bit there... sorry. Smiley: boozing

Hate to say it but if I were ever to start the addiction again I would probably boost myself by buying plat, I really dont feel like going thru levels 1-50 at that pace for like the 30th+ time.

AKA... goddamit you KSed my bandit in Paludal Caverns you sonuvabitch or that was my spiderling you ************, etc.

Psst.... you're paying real life money to play the game to begine with. Paying real life money to sit and camp things for hours. Paying real life money to make corpse runs... etc, ad nauseum. So what's the difference?

No, I've never bought any thing with real cash, but I've been sorely tempted many times.

That’s true Deathwysh; you are in fact paying for the game and the monthly fees to play.

That could be compared to about 15 mins. a week in the bar for entertainment. :P

What I don't understand is spending money for things in the game. Why buy play and/or items when you've already made the initial investment?

What Smash posted about what Pat said makes sense but at the same time it doesn’t. I mean you paid to camp those items or plat for the enjoyment of it. If it was a job or you considered your time = money when you play, you probably wouldn’t ever log on.

I'm really not complaining, I can now build a really kick *** computer with the money I made, just doesn’t make sense to me.

maybe if I was 15 and rich with my dad's credit card or

something, but I think about how much I do to earn every dollar

that I have, an no way is that going to Leaping Boots or

whatever. A cold beer at then end of a hard day is a much

wiser investment

You do have a point it was fun to be poor, but after experinceing it for the umptenth time it gets old. Doubt my veracity start a toon on a new server and see how little respect you are given. I know having the uberist **** isnt the end all but after you have leveled one toon to like 50 the rest dont really work for a living they get the leavings of the first toon.

I have never bought pixels with RL $$, just to get that out there. However, I hate camping mobs. I play to raid. Everything else I do is "work" to make me more effective in a raid - I do not enjoy AA grinding either.

I was sorely tempted to buy gear when I first started on FV, as SoC members were all level 30+ and I was having a hard, and unenjoyable time levelling up. I wanted to have fun playing with Smash, Taco, Baldis etc. Under this circumstance, I did indeed consider giving myself a leg up with what to me was effectively an insignificant amount of money.

I can understand the mentality. Even if I haven't done it. There are some aspects of the game that are not that fun, but necessary.

There is something nice about knowing that each and every peice of equipment you have was earnt. Be that from ldon points, raids, bazaar trading etc etc.

If I were to buy an item for RL cash I would have no attachment to it. Part of the joy I have in playing my ranger is the memories of the funny little groups with the people I like to play the silly game with. Part of those memories is earning my equipment or giving/receiving from friends in the game. To lose that, is to me, cheapening the game and would kill it.

I always enjoyed grouping with Akiea. I treasure those memories, he earnt every single item he had and deserves the money he has as people are willing to pay for all of it Smiley: smile

At the end of the day all you have are memories, not pixels. Which do you value more?

Aye, I do indeed have great memories of the friends and times I had in EQ.

I'm not thinking that any game will ever come close to giving me the enjoyment that EQ has.

FoS, SoC, then FoS and SoC again hehe good times... :)

if youre talking about buying a lvl 65 erudite enchanter, 65 ogre warrior and a 65 high helf cleric with time gear and 400 AAs each, then there is really not much fun to be had, but if your gonna buy 10k for your lvl 40 main to speed things up,
1) it dosent feel like cheating (to some)
2) there is still much of the game to be played, exept now iwht the boost of 10k behind you

I have never and probablly will never pay cash for pixels, however, I do think that some people get way too bent out of shape when some people do this. Me, I simply can't afford it. Even if I had the money to spare I would like to think that I would still earn it the hard way, but I also have to admit that the temptation would be much greater. I was lucky and had a buddy(who actually talked me into playing this game)hook me up with some semi twink gear. This was more satisfying than buying my gear with dollars, at least I'm pretty sure it would be. I still have this gear and keep it for its sentimental value and sleep with my great axe of decapitation under my pillow. Sure it's not the most amazing weapon, but it got the job done and when he gave it to me at lvl 20 and it replaced my rusty 2hander I was so happy. Now I'm still looking for the perfect noob to give it away to. The only problem is finding someone who will appreciate it and not lie to me about this being their first toon and go sell it in the bazaar.

Me?

I sucked off the sweet sweet tit of OoTers when I briefly came back into the game a year ago. I mooched, begged, borrowed, got PLed, and made a general parasitical pest of myself. I had the foresight to make a necro, thus ensuring that the inevitable solo times would be doable, but the equipment definitely helped.

Now I'm mooching off my son's friends for Lineage 2 crap with a Dark Elf chick. I could stare at that a$$ for hours...

I think if you've ever played in a high end guild you're disabused of the notion of paying cash for anything pretty quickly. When you take a turn with the guildbank character and have like 1,000,000 sitting there the thought of paying $$ for a few hundred thousand seems as silly as paying cash for monopoly money.
