You should have something similar to Ontario (not sure if the rest of Canada is the same), ie a 3 stage system.

G1- Only a written test, lasts 12 months, you have to drive with someone who has at least 4 years driving experience, but you can reduce this to 8 months if you take a drivers ed course. Also you can't drive on any 400-series highways (here that means anything over 80kmh). No blood alcohol allowed. No driving in the wee hours (like 2-5am in the morning or something).

G2- Have to pass a 40 min road test. Basically you have freedom now, but still 0 blood alcohol allowed. Have to keep this for a year.

G- Another 40+min road test, this is the standard license, now you can have the legal limit of alcohol too.

Anyway, I think it's a good idea.

So, in Ontario you can basically build up your alcohol tolerance over a few years in preparation for driving home after the bar. Wootles!

Drinking age in most of Canada is 19 (some like Alberta are 18). Here in Windsor (I go to U of W) Americans come up to the bars all the time, escaping the oppression of a 21 year old drinking age lol. I also started drinking at an earlier age...

Also, (not sure if it still is) but you can get a learner's driving permit in Alberta at 14.

Does anyone else find this statement scary?

One takes the written test to obtain a learner's permit. With a learner's permit, one can drive a car, provided there's a licensed driver in the car with them.

Why?

Because you have to know how to drive to get a license.

How else do you expect to learn how to drive if you're not allowed?

Yeah. but he said he's taking his written test and then his driving test. That's normal, and is unrelated to getting a learners permit.

I don't know about other states, but in California, this is how it's done:

At age 15.5 (somewhere around there), you can take a test to get a learners permit. This is not the full test you take when geting your license though (it's pretty darn similar IIRC) This allows you to drive as long as their is a licenced driver over the age of 21 in the vehicle with you.

At age 16, you can then go back and take the full written drivers test. Upon completion of that, you then take the actual driving test. Assuming you pass both, then then send you a provisional license in the mail. This allows you to drive, but actually has a red bar through it indicating that you are a minor still. Minors are still not allowed to be out by themselves after a set time (12PM I think?). There may be some other restriction on this that I'm not aware of. They are allowed to drive by themselves though, but the intent of the provisional license is to allow students to drive themselves to school and for those between the ages of 16 and 18 to be able to drive themselves to and from work. It's not intended for you to take a cross country trip, or go driving up to the mountains with though (and you can potentially be cited for that although unless you're doing something else wrong, I don't know of many cops who would care).

At age 18, assuming you've had no driving voilations, you can upgrade your licence to a full "normal" license. If you've had violations, you must retake the written and driving tests. From that point on, they just send you another licence every 4 years (assuming less then some set number of violations).

I've never heard of not taking a written and driving test at the same time, so that's not really anything to be paniced about.

In New Jersey (not Joisey but let the jokes begin) you can take a written test at 16.5 but up till the age of 18 have to wait at least 6 months to take the actual behind the wheel test. The driving permit and license are also provisional (i.e., with permit must have a licensed driver over the age of 24 in the car, no more than 1 other teen in the car, no driving between the hours of midnight and I think 5 a.m.). At 18, you get to be a real driver with no restrictions (other than the law). If at 18, you take your written test for a permit you have to wait a shorter length of time to take the actual driving test. You can't take the written test and the driving test on the same day. I took what Yanari said to mean (and I also found it rather scary) that it is scary that one can take the test to receive your LEARNER'S permit AND then turn right around and take the driving portion and get your license without ever having "learned" (at least legally) by actually driving.

In any case, I digress ... good luck on your test Trunks (but wait to come east to drive until you have a little experience under your belt ... even with our rules the drivers in New Jersey (while not as bad as Manhattan and Boston) are *cough* rather agressive *cough*).

I really think that 18 would be a great age to let people start driving. This 16 ****, is awful. I got rear ended last year by an idiot with only his permit.. grr.. ****** teenagers ( no offense to most of you teens out here).

10 bucks says you get into trouble driving in the first two years of you getting your license, Trunk. Either an accident, ticket, or suspension.

Just playin' the odds, buddy.

Okay, in Minnesota, there is no written test that's done the same time as the driving test. Just the driving test, eye test and smile for your license picture!

I assumed other states did them pretty much the same way.

Drive on, Trunks.

Well, down here in Texas, you can get a Motorcycle license for anything under 150 CC (Well, that was 12 years ago, when I did it. My roomies nephew says it's 250 now) at 15, and be driving by yourself. Once you're 16, the limit is lifted.

what pisses me off is the damn learners perment, my mom said when she was my age as soon as you turned 16 you could go get it that day if you wanted, now they pull all this extra crap on you where you have to wait longer, though no matter ill be getting mine this weekend..... <oh happy days...> (sings)

Wow, they changed things in New Jersey apparently. You were allowed to take your written test at 15 and a half. And at 16 you could get your provisional learner's permit; you had to complete 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction to get your actual learner's permit. Then at 17 you took a 10 minute driving test and smiled pretty for the camera.

I don't think the increased age limit is helping though. Them young whippersnappers are still triving like lunatics.

Not asking your social security number or anything, Trunks, but what part of Arkansas are you in? I'm in the NW part.
