Jophiel ("Beauty of God"): According to Pseudo-Dionysis, one of the seven archangels. In Jewish lore, Jophiel is the cherubim sent by God to guard the way back into the Garden of Eden after the expulsion of Adam and Eve. Jophiel's symbol is the flaming sword.

I've had a long standing interest in the celestial host in an academic sense (much as one might study Greek myth) and found the information on them fascinating. When I first started using Internet Relay Chat, I wanted a name that reflected my interest. Any "common" angelic name or term was often in use (Michael, Gabriel, Uriel, seraphim, etc) so I went a little more obscure and selected Jophiel. I rarely ever had trouble using Jophiel as my name and it just rode over into my other internet functions. Occassionally though I find the name taken and opt for the Greek spelling: Iofiel.

Well you see, I used to live in a swamp, back then they called me a "wiggler", but later I grew into a gnat of the genus Culex and allied genera. I have a proboscis containing, within sheathlike labium, six fine, sharp, needle like organs with which I puncture the skin of man and animals to suck the blood. These bites, when numerous, cause, in many persons, considerable irritation and swelling, with some pain.

Mine is a mispelling of the first part of the name of the first single sided 3 dimensional shape discovered and used as a symble for infinity. I have been using variations on that theme ever since I started playing around online 20 years ago. I was 10, hence the mispelling. It stuck.

hahahhaha *swats at skeeter*

Empyre is just a name i've been using as an alias since the commodore days. then some cheesy clothing line started using it. Smiley: disappointed I wanted to use Empire because the word symoblizes (to me) the world as i see it around me...it being my empire as it is what I make of it. The "i" never looked right in the word to me so I substituted "y" instead.

Belhade is a name I made up years ago when I wrote fiction in school (usually James Belhade). I kept using it and have adopted it as my internet persona. Later on I found out that Belhade is in fact a town in western France. The EQ character's surname, Baulien, was also made-up as foreign-sounding.

Debalic is another name I made up when playing Everquest. I was creating a high-elf cleric and wanted a noble elvish-sounding name; Hit the random name generator a few times, changed some of the suggestions around and came up with Debalic. The character's surname, Vanyamar, is kind of a mix of Tolkien names from The Silmarillion - Vanya(r), being one of the hosts of Elves, and Vinyamar, Turgon's fortress in northern Beleriand on the sea.

My necromancer, Dukeroger, is named after Duke Roger Conte, an evil character in a fantasy series who comes back from the dead. Hence the necromancer, although he himself wasn't the one who raises the dead but was raised himself.

The first name came from the EQ random name generator (and is also a small city in afghanistan, which they of course named after me!) the last name, Drachensborn came from my character storyline. Read the journal in my profile if you are curious. Basically it is Germanic for Dragon-Born. Sort of.

I like really short names for my toons so people can type them.

As I looked at my kilt wearing Celtic looking barb...
My last name in the game is McKittle (one of these days I will petition to cap the K which didn't work). Kittle is Scottish for a bit confused and muddled which certainly seemed to fit me, since I was always lost before maps and was by myself in a dungeon somewhere, because I misplaced my group.

I was in a conversation a while back about the origin of my name -- it was the name of my second shaman when I first started playing. I couldn't figure out why I had chosen Dalliance, other than my usual tangent conversations had somehow led to it.

But then I found old notes.

A conversation took place in which a friend and I were discussing short term versus long term relationships. His statement to me was "My dear, you would never be a mere dalliance."

Since then it has evolved into something a bit more personal, but it's stuck. I do all of my posting -- no matter which forum -- under some form of Dalliance.

back when i was playing online in my quake 2 days i was somewhere around the age of 7-9ish. i had gone through a bunch of blatantly unoriginal nick names (stuff like "killer" "punisher" "destroyer" "wolf" blah blah) and i thought, "hey i need something original, something unusual, something that will make people say 'what the f'uck' when i frag them". so, i thought for ahwhile and thought "hey, hippos are kind of an unusual animal to see running around rocket jumping and machine gunning down people. but plain hippo is just too damn dull. i bet a hippo that was gunning people down would have to be pretty angry... hey, ill be an angry hippo" and thus, Angry Hippo was born.

after quake 2 i continued using the name for all other first person shooters. the first message boards i visited were related to first person shooters (i think message boards for the quake 2 mod "gloom" were the first i ever posted on). seeing as it was a FPS board, i used my FPS allias. Flash forward about 5-6 years. Angry Hippo has been in use ever since is creation, and im now playing everquest. as i register for these boards it just seemed natural to be named Angry Hippo.

Hippo, I played Quake, Q2, Q3 pretty hardcore for some time. Went to a few lan parties and conventions (yeah, yeah, I know) and was on IRC a lot, in a #quake channel. And I always used Belhade (or Belhead, for a time in irc #mtg)
