According to an extremely unofficial source, US military personel at that time were also given pretty large sums of US currency with specific instructions to spend it in East Berlin, purely to ***** with the East German economy.

You know I didn't start drinking Vodka untill after the fall of Communism. Maybe that was the cause. If I had been buying Russian Vodka maybe the empire would still be intact.
It would make as sense in a cause and effect way as the argument you'd like to be true.

And if your aunt had balls she'd be your uncle. And when a former Air Force Secretary says you drinking vodka contributed to the fall of the former Soviet Union I'll give that soem credence.

This disturbs me at a fundamental level. Aren't we supposed to be the good guys?
We are the good guys. What were the Sovs doing trying to steal our tech for anyways? A little programming surprise like the one the CIA used is the equivilent of purposefully marking down wrong answers on your test that someone is blatently copying, waiting for them to go turn it in, and quickly going back and changing your answers to the correct ones.
Serves them right for stealing and trying to use shortcuts.
