Since the book club thread seems to have got buried under Homosexual marriage and other frivolites i though i better start a new thread Smiley: smile

The Book is called Speaker for the dead by Orson scott Card, it is semi Sci-fi in background <since it is set on another world and deals with Aliens> but is more an exploration of how we as a race deal with fear of those not like us.

It is book 2 of four in a series but can be read alone, in fact it was the book the author wanted to write but he couldn't work out how to do it without writing a prequal and then since he couldn't wrap it up at the end of the Main charicters involvement he ended up with 2 more books.

The first book Enders game deals with the main charicter youth and forms the reasons why the charicter becomes involved with the story in Speaker for the dead, it's a good book in it's own right and it might be worth you reading it aswell, but i think that you would love the second book.

Both are good books, but I would never read book 2 without reading the first book. Personality I thought that Ender's Game was the best book of the series, and with a fantastic ending.

But Card's best all time effort was Lost Boys. It is one of my all time favorites.

Has anyone ever seen Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing"? Its a pretty good movie about how pointless it is to judge people based on thier appearances. I had to watch it in one of the Criminal Justice Classes I took. I know its not a book, but it is still something that I think everyone should watch at least once.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm kind of ashamed to admit I haven't finished our book yet, things have been busy lately, but I'm curious as to how long my next book club thread will go before reducing down to breasts, whores, balls, etc.

I have other comments about the book since our last thread, but I'm in between ideas now, so after reading a bit more, I'll start another one where we can kind of go over the middle of the book, assuming we split it into thirds, I'd like to discuss part 2 of 3.

Remember and/or bookmark this thread, soon our book will be done and we'll be holding suggestions for our next book.

We'll just call this one our "practice run".

my favorite book is "The Lords of Discipline," by Pat Conroy never read "Speaker of the Dead" but I think I like Orson Scott Card if he is the same author who wrote "Seventh Son"

Orson Scott Card is one of the weirdest authors I ever read. I like him a lot, and have read most of his stuff. But his mind works in very mysterious ways. One wonders if he and Lewis Carroll imbibed similar substances.
