I've recently been playing around with different browsers and things again. Back in the day I was a diehard netscape user, but Netscape 4's inherant buggyness really drove me away, and so I don't fully trust firefox. But I really like the tabbed browser support, speed, and some of the features of Firefox. But I want to stick with IE for the stability, and IE's tabbed version isn't due out for another 4 months or so.

Then I found this:

http://www.avantbrowser.com/

The avant browser is a browser program that uses all the Internet explorer components, but adds tabbed browser support and all the goodies (the only one I don't see from firefox is the download manager). So basically, you keep your history list, favorites, etc. Can still use Internet explorer, and it doesn't take up the same size as a full browser. It does look different than IE, but there is a skin available to make it look the same if you are like me and don't like icons to change too much

And best of all, it's freeware. It asks you for a donation in a pop up once, and it has a splash screen you can disale in options, but other than that, no annoyances. Worth looking at I think if you haven't seen it. Easy to uninstall if you don't like it.

I've heard about that browser, even been tempted to try it, since I'm used to IE. Firefox and Firebird are nice, but still a bit buggy it seems. I might give this a try.

I have been using Firebird for the past four months, and have been very pleased. I have had very little trouble with stability issues. But I have had to download several plug-ins that would be standard with IE.

I agree about Netscape, loved the Gold Edition years ago. It's a shame what has happened to Netscape.

Just got Avent and I'm messing around with it now. LOTS of extra buttons, lol. But so far it seems really nice.

Yeah, for me, I got rid of the search bar and the "roboform" bar entirely, then applied that IE skin. That helped quite a bit in getting used to it I think. So far i have only noticed 2 things I don't like, I usually Click and drag with the scroll wheel when i want to scroll through a page quickly, in Avant, you have to click, release the button, then scroll. The other thing that was kind of annoying is that it sorts your favorites only alphabetically, not by chronological order like I am used to. I think the benifits outway those two things though. I really like the browser tabs and window tileing, and the built in picture blocking toggle means I can disable avatars at work completely here in the forums. That page translator built in to use the google translation service also helps.

I like it.

A few things I have found that make Avant Browser work better:
From Tools: Avant browser Options, under new window you can select "Always create new browsing windows in Foreground or Background" Setting this to Background allows you to open multiple links from the same page without having to click back on the page after each one.

Under Mouse Buttons, uncheck "Enable middle mouse buton click to open a link in the web page" it interferes with the scroll feature.

Under Tray Icon if you don't want the browser to show up down by the clock, unclick "Enable Tray icon"

Under E-mail Client, for "Please specify the email client:" select Other programs, and enter C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OUTLOOK.EXE in the box.

Under Ad blocker on the Black List tab, find the listing for *banner* and delete it. While that one may block one or two advertisements, it blocks far more legitimate web page banners.

Under Miscellaneous uncheck "Show splash screen when Avant Browser starts".
