What would you do if ...Follow

If all technology on earth was destroyed and our society fell back to Roman time technologies how would you cope, would you be happy? Could you survive without your car, Television and god forbid, Computer?

I ask this as the perenial board Technology addict Kaolian and I were having a discussion on this tonight in EQ. I was wondering how the bagel loving chippery addict would cope. I feel he would shake from withdrawl symptoms and try to build a computer from stones and wood Smiley: laugh He simply had a plan for world domination starting with cocoa fields and the purchase of Liberia (don't ask).

So ... how would you cope?

Oh and I cannot help but think of "Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy" book where the ship of management accountants and telephone booth engineers crashes on earth. Leaves for money ..... Smiley: laugh

Vivia la Resistance! Of course the ultimate goal of any civilization is to turn out Computers and bagels. I have a strategy all planned out, but i'll let a few other people answer first so they don't get any ideas...

The Roman era is far too advanced. I think humanity as a whole is a mistake, and 'civilization' is the worst technology we came up with.

Its my dream

Untwinked in the land of the dinosaurs - oops okay thats a bit early

I mean Roman times were a positive technilogical revolution - running water, roads, central heating - in fact they are the bastages that started this whole goddamm thing.

Not only would i survive I would revel in it .. I'd be there fighting em back .......imagine, those Romans are responsible for so much that is evil in the world, mobile phones - we'd be without them ...phones in general, we'd be without them, CLOCKS, we'd be without them...

Plot her revenge on Rome ............

Yes not only would i survive - I'd welcome it with open arms

Well, they did have books back then you know...

If we're assuming that civilization collapses, then it's not that the knowledge isn't there, just the capacity to use it isn't widespread. I'd form one of those super-secret organizations that would horde all the remaining tech and power in the world. Then, centuries later, when the apes run the world, we can use our super advanced mind powers to mess with any 20th century astronauts that happen to arrive to mess up our otherwise perfect world.

Actually the Romans stole tirelessly from the Greeks, so let's have a little more finger pointing in that direction. I think I could manage ok, but let's face it, Roman civilization really sucked. They were great innovators, but many died due to fires, disease, squalor and slavery. Not my cup of tea.

Never smoked crack, katie Smiley: laugh Without all the silly entrapments of our consumerism society, I'd probably be out hunting, or irrigating fields. Or sending retards and lesbians to spy on gbaji.

You could say that about Victorian England or even some modern day countries.

Hmmm, okie .. shall we say revise it to the caveman era? It will not be hard for the men of this board to think back that far will it? Smiley: laugh

For starters, I guess I'd register as a Republican.

'When in Rome', and all that.

Stone age now eh? hmmm.

Alright, first thing to do is set up a base of operation. Prefferably somewhere near a coastline, with a nearby river, moderate tot emperate climate, and plentiful natural resources. Assuming it isn't covered by glaciers, I'd pick washington for my familiarity with it. Set up shop near a location on the coumbia river where there is a deposit of Copper, Iron, Coal, and amythists. The smaller cowlitz river runs nearby, should be small enough to eventually dam up. Set up farms, and work on building a defensible fortification. Granite is plentiful in the area.

next, using a kiln based extraction technique, begin refining copper ore. Copper wire is still out of reach at this point, because there is not yet any steel, nor capability to machine rollers or wire dies. Save majority of copper in ingot form for now. Begin gathering materials for other material operations, including surface nickel deposits from eastern washington, Tin, whatever materails that are needed for chroming, and Iron. Build a larger blast furnace style kiln, begin producing carbons steel in small quantities. Save potash from refineing process, Begin collecting sulphur from hot springs to the north. Start gunpowder production. Also introduce concrete, and possibly asphalt if petrolium reserves can be located.

In the man time, domesticate animals, crops, and begin domestic improvements. Foster a culture of exploration, and send a trusted expedition down to Sutters mill, california. Collect gold from historical locations, set up outpost there, begin planning an expidition to South American rubber country and cocoa country.

Using steel produced, craft a water turned lathe, and a milling machine. These first machines will be crude and inacurate, but should serve to make better machines. Begin turning out bearings, wire dies, hand tools, and simple guns/cannons. Use wire dies amd roller bearings to start production of copper wire. Construct simple 3 stage generators and motors using bearings produced already. Begin glass production. Dam up river and produce an electrical generating station, and a mechanical power station. Produce ball governors to regulate machine speed. Using blown glass vessels, as well as copper and lead, begin production of led acid batteries (acid from fruit at first, or perhaps cut stomach acid from domesticated livestock?)

Send a secondary expidition to begin collecting cotton and flax from southern united states. re-invent the cotton gin, then begin production of various types of cloth fabric. Steel production should be increasing to the point that you have enough to begin building large scale machines. Begin construction of a full scale sheet metal production facility. Begin turning out mining machniery, pumps, pipelines, and valves. Send an expidition to alaska to set up an oil operation. Set up a refinery using a simple petrochemical cracking tower, begin production of machine oil, kerosine, and gasolene.

Start production of large desil engines. At this point, begin building a large shipping infrastructure consisting of cargo ships, exploration ships, and ironclad battleships. Start turning out rail tracks. Build a local rail infrastructure, based on desil engines.

Encourage rampant promiscuity in your civilization, to grow it in size quite a bit. begin spreading from Washington to other areas, expanding the rail infrastructure as you go. Start introducing electricity, radio communication, telegraph and telephone. Begin production of aluminum.

I imagien that by this time you would be quite old, so the next generation would have to take over. By then, civilization should be a somewhat self sustaning process. Leave detailed notes of high technology, up to and including the use of atomics (hey, they'll figure it out someday anyways, may as well set up how)

That, ina nutshell, is how I would restart civilization. I think once you have machining technology and can begin turning out complex tools, things would move rapidly.

Jen, you made it too easy when you revised the topic into the caveman area.

After giving it a little thought: I would probably invent football with the head of a poor villain as the ball, and use my tools to hammer match reports on big bricks of stone.

While I let Patrician club women over the head and drag them to my cave, of course.

Yes, but I think I proved my point about men being simple creatures and finding it easy to revert /nod.

Do you still carry a club about?

I would start a gang of thugs and go around pillaging and taking everything we could get our hands on. Once the group finally became large enough and we had enough slaves I would have them start building a castle. The castle would be located by a fresh water source and well protected by the geography.

I would use that as a base of opperations and create my own contry. Then would appoint local leaders to govern small sections of the country. They would be able to start their own towns under my protection and only needed to pay a reasonable tax for this protection.

Once the contry was established I would form a military, those who served for a set amount of years could retire with land of their own. The military would serve to protect the civilians of my country. Also there would be riches involved for those who discovered new technologies.

OK I can live without technology and computers if I have to.

But life without a toilet, and the nice soft paper that goes with it, is just a nightmare thought, it is almost like camping (shudder).
