Ok, who did their homework?

I guess 1 chapter wasn't a big enough assignment, I bet many of you have read more than that anyhow, so we should have a really good feel for the book now.

I didn't read too much into it yet, but so far, I like it.

To those who have read fantasy books already, what are your thoughts so far?

I noticed that the font is large, sentences are well spaced, and there are short chapters. I guess that's to keep the attention of teenagers.

I'm liking the story though, very easy to follow along with, good description of characters, and good dialog.

Your thoughts so far?

I'm really liking it so far. I don't know what chapter I'm on (since they're so short), but I read it last night till I was about asleep.

How does it compare to other fantasy books? Well, (and this is JMHO) you can tell it was written by a teenager, although he is a well written, well spoken teen. And I think that's the only comparison I can offer ATM since I'm not all that far into it.

But don't get me wrong, not bashing the guys writing style at all. I can tell it's going to be a great book.

Katie, Katie, Katie...

It's very nice that you have finished the book, but see, now comes the part when you tell us all about what you thought of it. Particularly, the beginning chapters. That's how a book club works! Yay! Smiley: banghead

Sooo...I finished the first two chapters and I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised with the story itself. The plot seems well thought out and good fun. I am a touch disappointed with the writing, because it seems a bit unpolished. I wonder where the editor was all along? However, for such a young writer I am very impressed. I am looking forward to reading a bit more and discussing the "guts" of the book a bit more. Smiley: smile

I liked it. Lots of action, lol gives away a little too much in the story line, but I loved it. For him being 18, this is an awesome book.

Fine to make Ms. ***** happy.....

Warning.. the following post goes into dramatic detail of the story, if your a board ***** like tare, please do not read.....

Gives too much away

In the story line you can almost guess whats going to happen. He is a very wonderful writer but now that we know whats going to happen...

dreaming of the elf-the witch tells him of an epic love

witch fortune teller tells him what is going to happen
says someone close to him will die, and tells him that brom's death is kind of a joke to them...

witch warns him of a betrayal, witch warns him of his companion murth or what ever his name was....

personally i think they are brothers, I think the slave is/was his mom, i think she ran off when she knew she was pregnant for a second time...

ok are you happy now??

Jesus christ, Katie. I have never met anyone quite as idiotic as you. First of all, do you even read these threads? Some people haven't read the entire book. Way to tell us aaallllll about it. No need to read it now, people, Katie has done us the courtesy of spilling the entire plot here for us. Phew! Thanks jackass!

Secondly, the literary term you are referring to is called foreshadowing and its purpose is to presage events to follow in the plot. Foreshadowing enables the plot's climax to be effective and logical. Now, perhaps this writer, because he so young, has difficulty using this particular literary device effectively; I will give you that.

Thirdly, can you pull your head out of your *** long enough to realize that "discussion" of a text is very different from simple regurgitation of the plot. Welcome to the grown-ups' table.

I do believe in the opening we did mention "spoilers". Im sorry if I offended you. You asked if I would elaborate, I elaborated. You asked for it, I provided the info. If you have a problem with that you can shove it up that *** of yours. It seems to do must of the talking anyways.
#15 Feb 10 2004 at 11:54 AM Rating: Excellent
Ok, I guess something is going on with the forums, hopefully that is why I haven't heard much from the readers.

I know that I kind of "started" this book club, but, as I mentioned, I'm new to this stuff, so don't hesitate to ask questions about the book that will get a good discussion going on *cough* *Totem* *cough*

To me it seems as if he is the main character, and telling the story of his adventures. The details he includes really make it seem like he was there, living it, kind of like sitting next to Eragon and listening to him tell me a story.

Being young, I think that is one of his advantages, I don't know about the rest of you, but as I age, my crazy imagination shrinks, his thoughts and story lines are very refreshing. Not too much action, nor too much dialog.

I read it as more of first person view, as if I were experiencing his thoughts and feelings as this story progressed.

See? This is exactly what I am talking about. You have no comprehension skill whatsoever. And, let me be the first to congratulate you on your outstanding ability to have a general discussion and discourse on a subject. Instead of trying to learn something, you tell me to shove it up my ***. Bra-vo, ******.

IQ level is off the charts! Oh, do it again, Katie! Hey, you can call me all the names you want, it's not my fault you don't know what foreshadowing is or how to discuss literature. I was simply trying to enlighten you a little, numbnuts. Next time, instead of assuming that your proclamation of finishing the novel first will garner you respect and intellectual kudos, you might want to actually start a "discussion" of what you read. That's the key! Smiley: wink2

Now, as this is a book club thread, maybe you want to post something constructive about the book that we can all discuss. For instance, how is the main character developed early in the novel? What's is important there? Are there tensions early in the novel to be discussed, and if so, why are they in place? How does setting make a difference? Are there main themes to be discussed? Yadda, yadda, f*cking yadda.

Can I help you to pull that **** out of your mouth?? You asked what I meant, I went into detail, if you have such a god damn problem with it, toooo ****** bad. You asked, and in my own opinion I answered scince the first answer I gave you was apparently not broad enough. I didnt say anything to begin with because of the exact reasons you are ******** about. No I didnt tell you how it ends, but it does give away the whole ******* plot to the book. Are you finished humping my leg??? You are the biggest ******* nut I have ever had the misfortune of meeting. BTW this is suppossed to be about the book. If you dont want my answer, dont ****** ask.

Lol. I was wondering, Katie my dear, what the phrase "lol gives away a little too much in the story line" actually meant. That sentence alone makes no sense. The plot, or story line, is the basic framwork of a story, therefore I wondered how a story line could give away too much of itself. Still not sure what the hell you are talking about.

And yeah, I'm gonna take a shot at you for revealing too much because you know other people are reading it and you are trying to "show off" that you've already finished it. We aren't all on welfare and get the chance to read between our favorite soaps. Chill it out, tiger. You can answer however you like but you don't have to wreck it for everyone else.

Finally, yes this is the book club thread, so why aren't you discussing the book? I even gave you some starting points. Jesus, do I have to spell it out for you? DIS-CUSS-ION. Talk about the book in some way, other than to give us a plot summary, and I will be appeased. In fact, nevermind, I will do it myself...a little later. Smiley: grin
