So my 30th birthday is upon me, and I've been thinking. Deliberately. I find I want to do something I've never done before.

I've never had a tattoo.

The which design/where will I put it questions haven't been determined, nor will they for a while. I want something small, cute yet meaningful, and easily coverable.

Anyway, there's a convention in Tampa towards the end of March, and I'm tempted to go. The last such "convention" I went to was when I was 19, it was a Sci-Fi/Fantasy fair, and the basic who's-who's list of Freaks R Us for the Gulf Coast.

Anyone know anything about these ? Are these things even worth it ?

I figured I'd go, see if I can find "my" design, and have it done if I can summon the courage.

Thoughts ?

Oh, and the link for those who might be interested :

Edited : Still can't do a damn link.

Dalliance, I have two tattoos and I love them. They're really for me, since I don't wear beaters and belly shirts very often and show them off. I like them because I love the artistry of them and they really help when welfare day comes. No one doubts I'm deadbeat then.

Just kiddin!...I say go for it. My mom was sooo mad when I got the second one. Her rational? "What will people say when you are 70?" I'll be too busy pissin' my pants to worry about it then.

Psstt..I've also enjoyed a lot of "male" attention generated by them, and hey, that's never a bad thing. POW!

Draw or have some one draw a custom one.

Please don't become the 900000th 30 year old woman to have a 3 inch square flash book design done on her shoulder or lower back.

Please.

Oh yeah, forgot to say that. Smash is right. Get one that is personal to you. Or you will end up hating it.

Thanks Flea, for sending Skeet's *** tattoo as an example to all of us. Work safe!

I've narrowed it down to three designs :

Either a gryphon with a crook and flail,

A dragon (white and black) yin yang,

Or a phoenix, wings spread, with a Celtic ring around it.

The third one is the one I'm most leaning towards, but it's full of colors, and I'm not sure if I'm tough enough for the pain. (It is, after all, a fear) I figure, though, if I'm getting pricked, it's damn well going to be personal.

What's a flash book ?

Location's another issue. I don't want to wear it on my knees when I'm 80, so either breast is out. I don't care for arms since it's a little too manly for me. I want to see it, but cover it so it's not obvious to all.

But I'm really interested in the cons and the subculture involved. Would I be relatively safe going alone ? Crowds of people, no matter their intent, sort of scare me anyway. Are they worth going to ?

I have one tattoo that runs vertically up my spine from my *** crack. (What??) It's pretty big and I would suggest avoiding that area due to pain factors. That really hurt. The other is on my left arm, at the top. I can still be "teacherly" and no one is the wiser, which is good for me. Your choice of location depends a lot on whether you are OK with people seeing the tattoo. I would stay away from the boobs too, because cheese factor is high there.

As for where to go, I think you go for your gut feeling. Most places are reputable these days. Ask them for their standards...like any good business, they have to comply to certain rules and regulations and if they want your business, they will provide you with any details you want. You should be quite safe...usually fairly nice folks.

Don't do what Tare did - i.e. get drunk in Germany and get your belly button pierced in a shop that has dog **** on the floor. Wasn't pretty.

Don't worry so much about the pain. It's part of the process of getting a design that will last you forever. I have five tattoos and the only one that really bothered me was one that lasted 2 1/2 hours ... that was a little too long.

Make sure you check out the work done by the artist before you choose someone. They should have a book with pictures/drawings in it.

Makes sure it's a clean environment. I've never been to a con so I don't know how they set them up there.

The artist should redraw your picture first, then he/she will place it where you want it so you can see what it will look it. If you don't like it there, have them move it as many times as necessary. Then the work begins. =)

A flash book is a book of designs that shops photocopy and then hang on the walls. Kanji, roses, dragon yin yangs :), Whatever. They seem cool when you're getting you first tatoo, safe, not too outrageuos.

Then you meet thirty five people with the same tatoo.

Not so cool anymore.

I've got japanese "yakuza" style ink.
2 full sleeves into chest plates.
Mostly gray-wash traditional.
sakura's and windbar's galore.

Just remember you can remove any tattoo color except red ;)

If you're leaning towards a phoenix check out the second picture down here. Although it could be nicer it's still pretty decent.

I assume via laser? Why not red then? is it something to do with iron based pigments in the blood cells? Just curious...

Me too! I wanted a tattoo once, but it was mostly red. This is making me think twice.

Correct, via laser treatment.

As for the exact reasoning, I'll have to ask my best friend / inker.

I know he always mentions it when someone goes for a tat in an obviously visible spot that has red in the design.

Like an 18 year kid that wants a big red heart that says "I like cheeze whiz" on thier forehead.

You could very well be dead on with the pigmentations. I'll let you know manana.

oh, not that there's anything wrong with a big red heart that says "I like cheeze whiz" on your forehead to those of you that have that. honest.

I loved the belly button tattoo. (That *was* a belly button, I hope ?)

Not my style, but extremely funny.

The "I like c*ck" one, I think, isn't necessarily my style either. Would be hard to explain, but a great conversation piece.

I'm thinking of taking the Phoenix from the Phoenix Cards (tarot-style deck) only giving him a wing span rather than a profile.

The coloration is there, and there is, indeed, quite a bit of red.

I need to find an artist, though. I'm looking for a one of a kind, not some dime a dozen picture.

I didn't realize the dragon yin yang was so popular. Something else I had thought of on the whole yin yang concept was a white lion and a black gryphon.

Sleeves are cool on other people. Not me, but I've seen some amazing art recently.

One of the best things I'd never do is :

[link][http://www.ringsofdesire.com/angel-bio.html ] [/link]

You have to scroll all the way to the bottom.

That's the woman that did most of my body piercings, and there was a black and white rear nude of her angel wings in the shop when I first went there. It was stunning.

Still trying to figure out a place to put it though.

Red ink can be removed like any other ink. Your freind is buying an old wives tale.

Edit: Before someone posts "no it can't" or whatnot:

I love all you tattooed hippie bastards. I, personally, have "I'm smarter than you" on my ***.

That looks like new technology to me Smash.
I'm no tree hugger, and it's sure not an old wives tale bud.

I bet there's a red heart on your fuc'kin forehead too, isn't there.

Funny you should mention that. That song about "Little wings on my feet" has been going through my head for days.

I don't want a tattoo right next to a bone, so I'll pass although the concept is intriguing.

I'd do it just above my belly button, but I have a gall bladder scar that would kind of take away from it.

Technically isn't everything next to a bone? asuming you have a skeleton. Which I'm pretty sure you do.
