Ok, I am a huge fan of both shows, but...

Which show is your favorite, and I want reasons. Plus, who is your favorite character from your favorite show. Best response wins the secret password that unlocks the gates of time...

Note: Delivery of password may take 6-8 millenium

I loved the Simpsons at first, for a few seasons, then it tired on me. Obsessed over South Park for some time, now Family Guy is my favorite. Though I have been watching Simpsons a lot again recently, and it's growing back on me. Brian, I suppose, would be my favorite character. His observations and insights just kill me!

Prepare for wishy-washy answer:

The best episodes of the Simpsons beat the best episodes of Family Guy, in my opinion. However, there's been so much crap done by the Simpsons over the last three-four years that at this point your average "pick out of a hat" episode of Family Guy is better than your average episode of the Simpsons. It's entirely possible that had Family Gone for ten-plus years, it'd suck even worse than the Simpsons became.

Favorite character I think is Brian off Family Guy. Especially when he's not the episode focus and is more understated.

Personally, I like Futurama and am waiting on the next DVD season.

I love the Simpsons...I think everyone will agree that after 15 years or whatever it's been, it's pretty hard to beat, but Family Guy cracks me up. I love Joe, the disabled cop and Stewie, of course! I like the one with Stewie's mind control device, when Peter rips off the welfare money. LOL...that's good times.

Although I find The Family Guy hysterical for the most part, The Simpsons wins hands down for my following reasons:

* The best comedy - funny, clever and sophisticated (well, for the most part...) writing on television for a very long time...
* Homer J. Simpson
* The Comic Book Guy
* Groundskeeper Willie
* Prof. John Frink ("Glavin!")
* Mr. Burns ("Release the hounds")
* Many, many other outstanding characters...

Like I mentioned, I love the Family Guy, but sometimes the humor is a bit forced. However, Stewie rocks and Brian is great. I enjoyed it better than Futurama, which I wanted to love, but it just wasn't as great as The Simpsons or The Family Guy.

Smoggy, I bought the DVD sets of Futurama and love it. Try 'em again. Hilarious.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I do like Futurama! I just like the other two better.

And I will pick up The Family Guy DVDs as soon as I can...

Since you all enjoy the same wacky humor I do, allow me to make a recomendation - pick up The Tick DVD (the live series, they don't have one for the cartoons, dammit - they were funny, too). It's only 9 episodes, but they are all absolutely hysterical. Patrick Warburton played The Tick outstandingly.

Spooooon!

Heh, I loved the Tick cartoons ("I can taste the floor!") but the live show never really grabbed me. It had its moments, just not enough to justify thirty minutes of watching it.

* The Comic Book Guy
You know, I like this character but, my God, if I have to hear one more Simpsons fanboi respond to criticism of the show with "Yeah, remember that episode where CBG says 'Worst episode ever'?", I'm going to punch someone. If the show has gone down in quality, it's gone down in quality. And don't pull that Bart Simpson "you've gotten hours of free entertainment, what right do you have to judge?" crap on me either. The only reason the show is on the air is if people think it's worth watching. I "pay" for it with my viewership by making the advertising time worth the expense of running the show. I have every right to comment on if an episode sucks or not.

That's not directed at you, I just needed to rant a moment Smiley: grin

Anyway, I'm in the pretty well populated camp that says the show peaked around seasons 5-7 and started a slow slide after that.

The Simpsons was revolutionary for animated comedy series. It was great, and still is good. But I'd have to say I'm a bigger fan of The Family Guy atm. Gotta love Stewie's plotting, that stuff is just too funny. The best one was when Meg got him hooked on pancakes and SS took him and put him in the foster home. He had all those kids hating each other by the time he left. Great stuff.

Simpsons is the better show on ballance. Better writing, more subtle in jokes. Aside from the annoying "Homer is real dumb this week!" episodes, most Simpson's episodes will be funnier than most "Family Guy" episodes.

ATHF is funnier than both by about 10 times though.

If you haven't seen it, kind of tough to do justice with an explination.

Never heard of it. Of course, my television hasn't been hooked up since I moved last August, except to my VCR/DVD player.

It's a 15 minute show about a carton of french fries, a shake, and wad of meat who have adventures with their hairy neighbor Karl.

Rent the DVD. Like I said it's hard to do justice without seeing it in person.

Aqua Teen is funny in a "Thats so ******* stupid it's genius" sort of way.

I would have to say that Family Guy is better.

Stewie is my favorite

Family guy is slightly better but i'm greedy i want BOTH!!

on a charicter basis

Homer is better than Peter < he plays the dumb dad to perfection>

Lois is better than Marge <sorry the whole blue hair thing is beyond me>

Bart is better than Chris <Bart is the best part of the simpsons while Chris is the worst of family guy>

Meg and Lisa are equally underused but funny

Stewie is infinately better than the simpsons baby that i can't even remember the name of it's made such an impact>

Brian is infinately better than Santa's little helper <Brian makes Family guy he has me in stiches especially the episode where is wets himself Smiley: lol

the support cast is pretty much the same in that i like both. so Family guy wins on account of the dog go figure.

ATHF is outrageous! I love that show. It's just too crazy to make sense. I don't watch much Adult Swim, but Sealab 2021 is all right. Don't watch the anime shows (Big O? I dunno...)

Yeah, that has to be my favorite episode as well. Stewie is the only reason for me to watch The Family Guy. Did I miss something or didn't The Family Guy get cancelled? Are they running new episodes somewhere else now?

I've caught ATHF and it's ok, I haven't watched enough of it to suck me in.

Sealab 2021 is very funny. I love Stinky Pete and the episode where Chubby Cox becomes a male model. Hysterical stuff. Not sure if it was the same episode, but I like the one where everyone was trippin' on acid.

I'm still a South Park fan when I can remember to watch it. I love Cartman, Tweak and Butters (especially when he becomes Captain Chaos).

I agree with Tarv on his run down of Simpsons vs. Family Guy characters. Stewie is awesome and is definately my favorite though.

However, the sheer longevity of the Simpsons would make it #1 to me. That and their Halloween episodes. =)

I heard a rumor that The Family Guy is back, but I don't know where/when. And I don't have cable, so it's not like I can check.

They still show reruns on... Cartoon Network? Comedy Central? Some Viacom owned basic cable station, anyway.

My friend tells me that, based off the brisk sales of the DVDs, they decided to renew the show and start making new episodes. But then again, my friend says a lot of things, so get a second source on that before you set your VCR.

ATHF is funny, but Family Guy is better IMHO. C'mon, the episode where Brian get addicted to crack is just awesome. Or how about the one where they stop at the indian casino and Lois loses the car? At the end... "Canada Sucks" HILARIOUS!!!

Don't hurt me please Tare

Noooow, c'mere Twizted. I just wanna show you something.

I heard that too, Jophiel, about the new episodes, but I have yet to see any evidence of said episodes. I'm glad the Simpsons got as good as it did over the years, because "the Bartman" of days gone by was almost enough to turn me off it forever. Remember that retarded song?
