So Bush is proposing $1.5 billion to spend on promoting marriage, and 2/3 that amount for proposed Moon AND Mars missions. Wedding costs must really be through the roof.
Discuss.

That would be in addition to Nasa's standing 15B budget.

$1.5 billion could get every "low income" single person in the United States a month on Match.com!

Since when is it the government's job to tell me if I should be married or not? Make the space budget $2.5 billion instead and at least be doing something productive with the money.

17.5 billion then. Still better spent than on "defending traditional marriage values" or whatever.

Smiley: oyvey What an excellent use for our money. Let's teach people how to stay married!

I have a much cheaper solution. Why don't they just make it harder to get married in the first place? It takes six months (?) for a divorce to go through. How about six months/one year for a marriage license? Maybe then people would think about it a little more. /shrug

You know, speaking as a service member, i like the prez for what he has done for us. Namely pay us better than your average burger flipper for a change. But its times like these that I have to wonder if maybe the dunce cap of his isn't just a joke. The government should have no involvment on saying who can get married or not*. Spend more money on NASA or something important, like raising state budgets so that they can afford more and better trained police officers and teachers, the things we need, not things they assume we might like.

Reading r teh r00l!!!!111!!

So just out of curiousity, what part of the service are you in? God help us if it's missile control and you fail to read the big-*** "DRILL" on the top of the launch excersize message.

Go through the omnibus bill some time. Tell me if some cash for promoting marriage is the dumbest f*cking thing you see there. Nah, nevermind, I will clue you in.

WE PAY FARMERS TO NOT GROW STUFF.

WE PAY POOR PEOPLE NOT TO WORK.

WE MAINTAIN THE MOST POWERFUL MILITARY ORGANIZATION ...
oh, wait, I like that one, nevermind.

See my point? No? Well, lemme susplain it to joo. So happy you have an opinion. SOOOO happy it doesn't mean ****. You probably feel the same way about me. GOOD. :) It's yer god given right.

To the specific question? I am personally pretty happy about any program that will attempt to introduce some sort of family consciousness to the "low income" (he meant ghetto, he just didn't say it). Maybe that can defeat the cycle of welfare litters and criminal college attendees that are just lookin for a daddy.

Because the problem with the ghettos is a lack of "interpersonal skills" between married couples. Smiley: laugh

***** making it take longer to get married. Make it so it takes 5 years to divorce.

THAT should make people think twice about "Is this really the person I want to be with?"

Even if it took 5 years to divorce, it wouldn't stop me from proposing to my S.O. 'cause I don't ever plan on getting divorced. But it might persuade the Britneys of the world into thinking twice before getting drunk and eloping.

If by they you are referring to the mass of socio-economicly challended individuals who dwell on the razors edge of the solution/problem debate and happens to encompass a wide range of racial, ethnic and religious accolytes, then yes, you east-coast-liberal-pandering-to-the-downtrodden Kennedy-ite, "they" are. :)

Yeah, what the hell were they thinking being born into poverty like that. They should have been born into upper middle class homes where they'd learn important moral values like ********** the poor and blame them for not having access to opportunity we take for granted"

Hey, at least 1 out of every 10,000 or so become a famous rapper.

That's got to count for something.

Don't hear of very many Rappers that started out in a nice house with a loving family and a decent income/education.

See? When he's really amused he can spell. :)

There you go Smash, old boy. Now that we have you thinking like an intelligent person, instead of one of those New England pseudo-intellectuals. We make our own opportunity. That's what liberals don't understand. It's the old adage, give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, he eats forever (or until the europeans and japanese fish the oceans dry).

Do I sa f*ck the poor? No. Not at all. I say get up off your *** and make something of yourself. I am not an upper middle class kid. My old man supported a family of 6 on less than 40 grand until I was in my teens (Fortunately, I am the oldest, so I didn't get as many hand-me-downs. Smiley: smile). I am now upper middle class myself. Why? Because I got off my *** and made something of myself. Teach them to be constructive members of society. Forget the marriage thing, teach them how not to talk to a customer like he or she is a homey from down the way. I don't need to hear "whatchu need?" every god damn time I get to a drive through window. You may take opportunity for granted (or is the beach house part of the super spy facade, too?) but I worked for what I have. And it pisses me off that there are quite a fiew people out there who have to do nothing but make more babies to get a raise.

no one forced them not to make the effort i grew up on a rough estate where most of the people where losers but it didn't stop me working for an education, getting a job and making myself into a decent human being.

at worst they could join the army at least it pays well.

i left home at 18 with nothing only a commision only job to get me my rent. at 28 i have my own house a well paid job and a family that i love and respect. I didn't sit on a street corner smoking dope and wish myself a job i had to work for it. that is the problem people are just too damn lazy to help themselves.
