well, i wanted to enjoy my surround sound capable speakers so i went out and bought a sound blaster audigy LS (or L5, im not sure). i have run into a problem though. i expereince MASSIVE static, both through speakers and headphones, to the point where i can almost hear nothing else. so i *am* recieving sound through the card, but it very staticy. i recieve static even when there is no "sound" playing when the speakers arent turned up so loud so as to make noise without input.

i have an integrated sound card on my motheboard, but i have disabled it in device manager. if that has anything to do with it. would it help if i screwed around with the jumpers?

if it matters my integrated sound card is a c-media wave device ac97

It's good that you disabled the on-board sound, that isn't the problem.

Could be many things, I suggest downloading the latest drivers for your sound card (assuming you used the disk instead of downloading the newest drivers)

Next go to your mixer, look in the lower left corner and where it says "digital output" make sure it is NOT checked. Should be a little icon in your task bar which lets you change all the "sound effects", should be able to get to it from there.

Also could double check if you put the jacks in the right holes. Should be using 3 out puts:

Analog out for your center/sub woofer

Line level out (Rear)

Line level out (Front) / Headphone out

There should also be a 'line in' and a 'microphone in', possibly a 'Telephone Answering Device in'.

IIRC the speaker related jacks are reddish, greenish, and black.

i checked the drivers on the creative website (in addition to windows auto update) and there were none.

orange, black, and green are the colors (orange = yellow, for speakers, though) and im sure they are together.

ill try the other things tommorow.

Make sure the plugs are in the right sockets... I had that problem. From the far left side of the card it goes 3-2-1 going towards the right. I know its probably a stupid thing to want you to check, but I had the exact same problem and I had just plugged them in to the wrong outlets.

Also, you might want to check how many other wires are in and around your speaker wires... from what I know, the creative labs speaker wires aren't shielded and are highly suceptible to other magnetic fields. This can create static and popping if you're not careful.

That's all I got. Creative speakers = okay, but not the best. They are good for video games, but large scale movies tend to overwhelm the little things just a tad. Damn good card, though. I really love it.

i actually have altec lansing speakers, and a creative labs soundcard. i get the same result (i can hear some sound, but massive static) using both speakers and headphones.

also, according to my instructions. the jacks are not all lined up next to each other. one is to the very far right. and the other two are both on the far left. according to the instructions there are two jacks seperating the pair and then the one off to the side.

Try playing with the audio settings. What you describe is usually the result of the computer sound sliders being up too high, then the speakers amplifying the excess noise. Try either increasing the volume of the sound from the computer and decreasing the volume on the speakers themselves, or if that doesn't work, try the opposite. You can also take care of the problem by going to Radio shack and grabbing a line filter inductor (looks like a square black plastic hollow rectangle with an iron core, about 1" x 2"

It's probably the output though.
