Stupid Computer QuestionFollow

#1 Jan 07 2004 at 11:18 PM Rating: Excellent
Let me preface by saying this might be a really stupid question, but I want to be "safe" so I'm going to break down and ask it anyway.

Merri is building a new computer and randomly gets parts for it. It will be at least another two months (if not much longer) before it's complete enough to use.

Her old computer is slowly dying, and a few weeks ago her video card went out. Being the wonderful, awesome person that I am, I let her take the card out of my desktop. Now I don't have a video card, and we really can't afford to buy even a cheap one. My laptop can't handle jack ****, and I'd really like to get the desktop running again.*

Anyway, she got a new video card for Christmas, and I'm wondering if I can use it in my desktop. It's an 8x AGP Asus card. I do have an AGP slot ... my concern is that the card is so new and "powerful" and my machine is old and might kill it somehow.

Thoughts?

*I'm thinking of playing EQ again. Yes, I know, I'm going to hell.

P.S. I've heard talk of a "tech forum" for these questions, but that would involve me leaving THIS forum. Sorry, no can do.

You must have realized ahead of time that this foray in to cross posting might draw my ire, and thinly veiled questions as to your chromasomal heritage. However, since you laughed at my joke, I am prepared to let you off with simply a stern warning. After all, how can we keep the river at bay if I can't even keep you people from cross-posting?

Plus, I wanted help from you people, not a bunch of people I don't know. I don't trust them. Not that I trust any of you, but at least I like you guys. =)

Dis is mah home. I can't go to those other forums!

It should be ok, my buddie has one of my 128Mb DDR video cards on his Pentium 2, 400 mghtz computer. Just won't be able to use the video card to it's full potential.

Actually, it's a trick. the tech support forum is here:
https://everquest.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=25
And guess who answers most of the questions in there?

Ordinarily as part of my evil plan to get all tech support questions to go in that forum, i would make you post it over there before answering (even though someone else might answer it then, the horror!) but in this case I'll be nice.

Depending on what model card this is and how old your computer is, there might be a slight problem getting it to work. The card itself should ramp down to 2x or 4x with no problems, but you have to have at least an agp 2x slot for the computer to even be able to recognize the card. You can find out if you do have such a slot by going to bios and seeing how high the agp aperature will go up to. Or you can post your computer specs here and I can probably tell you.

The other issue is Power supply. For those 8x cards, you need at absolute bare minimum a 300 watt power supply (350 is adequate, 400 is better, but 300 will theoretically work...). If your computer is old enough it may be running a 250 watt power supply. If it is, you will almost certanly lock up whenever you try to run a 3d game.

Assuming you instal the card properly you shouldn't be able to damage it, even if the slot type or power supply is wrong. It just won't initialize.

You can find a geforce 4 mx on ebay for around $30 these days. I dunno if that is in your budget, but It will run EQ and can be aquired cheap.

She's got a badass powersupply. Thermaltake 480watt. I'll pop the card in tonight and see if it'll run.

She's running a four or five year old Athalon.... I'm not sure what the comp's precise specs are, as we can't boot it at the moment.

Here's a better question: how come every time I get a new computer part, it ends up in Angua's desktop? See above PS for proof positive. I'm waiting on her to steal my motherboard and soundcard.

*****!

Nah, the RAM we have won't work with your new motherboard.

I tried. Smiley: lol

Sorry, Kao. =( Next time I'll post in that other forum. I'll just ignore all those strangers and wait for you. Thank you for responding though!

I feel like a little kid that got their hand slapped.

woohoo! 500 posts! only another 4000 to go before I'm a big kid!

You shouldn't. There was that thread about a desktop photo, and the other one about computer speakers. It's been done before. You all right, sista.

/cries on Flea's shoulder.

Remember what I told you on the last thread yesterday? I think my withdrawl is going to take a different form than expected... I'm feeling more needy and hyper-sensitive than usual. /sigh Maybe I should change my signature to: be nice to me or I'll cry.

Yes, because as we all know, as long as other people are doing it too, it's pefectly ok for you to do it.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to video tape myself pissing on a 14 year old.

Goddamn it but hormones are a *****. You never know when they're going to rear their ugly heads. Subtract one thing from your stimulants/depressants and boom. I had a tooth pulled once and when I woke up I cried my eyes out.Smiley: cry My doctor said some women react that way to general anesthesia. Dirty genetics. I wish my hormones didn't have to remind me that this body was made for nurturing babies. They suck. I commiserate.

I had pretty much stopped drinking Coke too (the main liquid staple of my diet for years now) but decided I couldn't handle both at the same time. I figured it might just push me off the deep end. And while I find the deep end to be interesting and possibly entertaining ... I think for everyone's sake it would be safer if I stayed out of that pool.

Villians! I say to you now: Knock off all that evil! The Tick

Nahh, a good The Tick quote is always a solid choice. My wife got me the short-lived The Tick series (starring Patrick "Puddy" Warburton) DVD...it rocks.

Fave all time The Tick quote - "Evil, EAT MY JUSTICE!!"

Sigh... I wonder if there is a DVD for the animated series, that was an awesome show and Townsend Coleman's voice acting was perfect for The Tick.

**Edit** I'm always forgetting to close my parenthesis...dammit.

Just to clarify foI wasn't actually annoyed or anything. It was just a chance to advertise the tech forum. Sorry if i came off as being annoyed.

It's okay, Kao, you really didn't. I'm just being sensitive. There are only a few people on this board that could actually hurt my feelings, and you are one of them. Luckily the people who could aren't the type that would. =)

Thanks for finding that, Atomic! I agree with the Skeetmeister that it's gotta be illegal though...Guess I'll have to hope that a petition mentioned on one of the Google searches comes to fruition...or, I'll find someone in Canada to tape all the episodes on their Cartoon Network equivalent.

I appreciate the effort for which I was too lazy to do myself, heh.

Oh, and Spoooooon!

Of course it's illegal! Taped by a brownie like me. The term "VCD" is a dead giveaway.

I think that's one of the nicer things anyone has ever said about me in this forum, I think?

VCd's are a kinda greay area. They are legal if you actually own a copy of the media in question (say you have a VHS tape of Star Wars Episode 4, it is legal for you to own a vcd of that media) Or it is also legal to have a vcd of programs recorded off of TV, provided you do not attempt to sell viewing rights.

Since the guy is selling it as a "VCD of this..." he is technically in the wrong for selling, but you would be OK for owning. He should say "selling a VCD, this vcd happens to contain these shows recorded from public access media free of charge..."

There is a bit more to it than that, but you get the idea.
