Some of my friends and LSs been hit with some new wave of account stealing recently. Not sure what the method is being used to steal your passwords (possibly different from the past?), but I strongly recommend people to be careful what they are doing when they are surfing the web -- including blocking and filtering scripts (some Firefox add on is able to do that, and also commercial virus protection software), update your Adobe Flash, and do not download from or visit suspicious websites.

If you do get hacked, contact SE ASAP, backup your files, and re-format your hard drive. Remember if your MMORPG account at risk, it also means your online banking, personal finance, online tax filing, and other sensitive info on your computer are possibly at risk to be stolen.

My best friend IRL got hacked this week, definitely take Amanada's advice because it's happening.

He runs only Firefox with Noscript/Adblock, runs virus and malware checks every single day, and has never typed in his password once, and they still managed to get his info somehow.

Luckily he was able to lock the account, but he has to get it rolled back because all of his gil and expensive gear was gone, so he's out for a week or two while that happens.

Someone in Vedder's LS talked to GM and said there is a way to get key logged if you do not update Adobe Flash -- a very common plug in to web browser. Often you do have to give a green light to script blockers when you go to sites that uses Flash to display things (ranging from YouTube and Square Enix sites to not so legal online video viewing sites).

Anyway >< with all this hacking and cheating, sometimes make me even think if online gaming and entertainment are worth actually the headache, and try to deal with the Internet only for work purposes. Online gaming is more than simply gaming nowadays for sure, at least in the traditional sense:P.

Apparently (see threads in main forum: http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=10&mid=1250882132148656022&num=25&page=1), it is actually possible to directly hijack a computer during log in procedures to an online site or gaming account.

Basically the identity thief let you to enter your password (one time or not), hijack your PC and boot you out from Playonline or web browser, block the software to be restarted easily, mimic your Playonline and browser session onto their computer, and use the time window that you are trying to recover your session to do s**t.

This is alarming that no one-time password can protect you from this. In fact, you still enter the one time password with your own hands. The only way to stop being hit by this is to actually prevent the virus that allow the hijacking to never enter your PC.
