What to do ...Follow

Okay - I'm totally new to the game (started 6/20/2004) - and am absolutely and completely HOOKED!!! ... but... I have a TON of questions, and I seem to find that experienced players frown on "n00bs" ... so what do I do???

Don't get me wrong - I have met some awesome folks - but the dis-respect from n00b-haters is discouraging some days (apparently they been playin so long they forgot what it was like to be new?!)!! ... so I stumble on to Alla and here I am.

I started this thread in order to have a place for all my stupid questions - putting aside fears of n00b-bashing - and hoping for some guidance...

>>> now so stunned that I got this far, I can't think straight and forgot my running list of questions <<< Here's some starters:

1. Are you supposed to do the rank quests also, or can you only do the ones for your homeland? (I'm assuming homeland only cuz I can't seem to even get them offered).

2. How long do you have to fish (or how much do you have to catch) before you are anything more than an Amatuer?

3. Should I be keeping beastmen seals? I have over 50 now, and no idea what they're for or when (if ever) I'll need them.

4. Is it OK (advised or not) to work on another job so that someday when you reach 18 and manage the SJ quest, you'll already be kinda ready to make use of the capability?

5. And while we're asking about sub-jobs - I'm a little "frantic" when playing so skipped a MAGE type job because I just know it would be more than I could handle (at least right now) - but I think I'm becoming a good WAR and am thinking to sub MNK to be even better... Is that a good combo? - will I ever be invited to a PT?

Okay - that's all that I can remember just now... thanks for kind forebearance!!

Good hunting fellow adventurers - and to those who've helped me to this point - THANK YOU! See ya'll around the wonderful world of Cerberus...

Q: Are you supposed to do the rank quests also, or can you only do the ones for your homeland? (I'm assuming homeland only cuz I can't seem to even get them offered).

A: The rank quests are only for your home country. Also, keep in mind that you may need to trade crystals to the gate guard to get enough rank points to get the next mission.

Q: How long do you have to fish (or how much do you have to catch) before you are anything more than an Amatuer?

A: Fishing, like cooking, woodworking, smithing, goldsmithing, alchemy etc, is a skill. The more you do it, the more 'skillups' you get. Fishing seems to take a fairly long time to skillup compared to the other skills, but it's also probably the cheapest.

In answer to your actual question, when you achive a skill of 8 you will be able to talk to the fishing guild in Windurst, and be offered a test to achieve the next rank. The first test, you need to catch a moat carp, then trade it back to the guild NPC that gave you the quest.

Keep in mind that all fish (and crafted items, as well as combat skills) have a skill cap. That is, after a certain point, you won't get any skillups from them anymore, and will have to move on to tougher items or fish (or gain a level in the case of combat skills) to get any more skillups.

Q: Should I be keeping beastmen seals? I have over 50 now, and no idea what they're for or when (if ever) I'll need them.

A: YES!! Don't throw them away, they're used for BCNM quests at levles 20, 30, 40 and 60. (Possibly level 50, but to be honest I forget) These are generally very lucrative battles, but also very tough.

Q: Is it OK (advised or not) to work on another job so that someday when you reach 18 and manage the SJ quest, you'll already be kinda ready to make use of the capability?

A: Again a resound yes. Generally speaking there are really only 2 or 3 jobs that will be good to sub to any other job. Take WAR for example. MNK is hands down the single best subjob for a beginning WAR. However, later on, NIN makes a very nice subjob. You'll save yourself some of the boredom that comes from grinding levels if you level your subjob a little bit while levelling your main. You can solo MNK to 15, which will take your main job to 30 with a fully leveled sub.

Q:And while we're asking about sub-jobs - I'm a little "frantic" when playing so skipped a MAGE type job because I just know it would be more than I could handle (at least right now) - but I think I'm becoming a good WAR and am thinking to sub MNK to be even better... Is that a good combo? - will I ever be invited to a PT?

A: If you're going to stick with a melee type job, I wouldn't bother with mage types until you want a change of pace. I covered the second half of your question above, but I'll say it again, MNK is an awesome sub for WAR. You'll get invites, especially if you keep your subjob leveled.

As an aside, you'll find that gil is hard to come by in this game. I urge you to get used to farming (that is, killing things for gil, crystals ad items) early on, so you can keep your equipment up. Trust me when I say that the better your equipment, the better your character will be, the better reputation you'll get. If you get discouraged, take a break, level another job. No job is all that expensive to level to 10.

Also, start using food. As a WAR you have 2 options available to you, Meat Mithkabobs, and Fish. Fish raises defense and vitality, the Mithkabobs raise strength and attack.

Another suggestion would be to get yourself a linkshell, I happen to be able to make linkpearls, and would be ecstatic to add a player that actually wants to learn to our ranks. That being said, please don't hesitate to send a /tell to Junpei, and I'll do my best to make sure you get on our LS.

Finally, lots of questions can be answered by following the links on the left. I know this site is huge and can be intimidating at first, but you'll get used to it soon enough.

Welcome aboard!

I'll be glad to answer your questions.

Tunie wrote:

You can do regular quests for fame. These you can do in any nation you choose, granted you have enough fame to be offered the quest. You can start out doing lower level quests that are repeatable to raise your fame. After that, more quests will be available to you.

Missions are to raise your Rank. Talk to the guards around the gates in town. They will give you missions.

Tunie wrote:

Once you reach level 8, you can go to the fishing guild and turn in the test item to be promoted to the next rank. In this case the promotion item is a Moat Carp. Turn that in at level 8 and you will be promoted. Every 10 levels after that, you can go to the fishing guild and see what item you need to turn in to be promoted.

You gain skill points just by tossing in your lure. Sometimes your skill points raise, sometimes they don't.

Tunie wrote:

Yes, keep them. They are used for Burning Circle Notorious Monsters, or BCNM. BCNM's drop rare items that usually can be sold for a good amount of gil. Sure beats farming if you have a good honest team that can kill them.

Tunie wrote:

Of course. If you get tired of leveling one job, just go to your moghouse and change jobs. Once you change back to that first job, it will be just as you left it.

Yes, MNK in my opinion is the best sub for WAR for those without the advanced job. THF also works pretty well.

Hope that answers your questions and if anything was unclear, let me know and I'll try to be more specific. Anyways, welcome to the game. Good luck and have fun! Smiley: yippee

To increase your Rank you do Missions (which are like quests, but sometimes more difficult). A higher rank unlock some more quests (e.g. San d'Oria rank 2 let you access the castle where you can get some nice quests. You can only do mission for your homeland, the rank is nation based. (There is a possibility to switch homeland but it cost gil, 20'000-40'000 I think.)

At rank 5 you get an Airship pass that let you travel between Jeuno and the other cities. It's very fast and reasonably inexpensive (200 gil).

Quests you can do no matter what your homeland is (except for the ones that require access to restricted zones such as the Sandy castle mentioned previously, but they are few.)

Yes, keep them all. You will need them all and then some. They are used for to get orbs in Jeuno to do BCNM battles (they are boss fights with nice rewards, if you win.)

Yes. Personnally I level the jobs I am interested in "simulatenously", e.g. I levelled BLM, WHM and RDM to 10 before to head for the dunes, then did the dunes from 10-20 with BLM, WHM and RDM, then did Qufim from 20-25, etc. You get to know the area really well by the end of your last subjob levelling ^^ Of course it takes longer.

WAR/MNK, MNK/WAR, WAR/THF and THF/WAR are viable combos. You will get party with those. Just make sure your sub is always at the max level possible (half your main). WAR is a very flexible job, I suggest you check the Warrior forum. Depending on the food and equipment you use you can either be a tank or a damage dealer. A great WAR keep both set of equipment around to adapt to what the party need.

A few things to get good parties:
* Try to party with people of the highest rank possible and who have sub level at half main.

* Use macros.

* Learn quickly about skillchains. When you join a party, elaborate one with the fellow melees, if they know what a skillchain is, they will appreciate. If they don't teach them. If several skillchains are possibles, pick the ones that give an elemental effect that match the monster weakness (and on which the mage can Magic Burst.)

* If you can afford it, use food. The impact on your stats is much more important at low level than at higher level (but you will always need food.)

I hope this help,

Janus

You can also trade crystals to skip missions (if it's not a mission you have already accepted). If you trade more crystals than you need rank points to reach the next rank, the extra points will be converted to conquest points (and afterward you won't be able to give crytals until your rank change.) The type of crystal don't matter, so give the cheapest ones (usually Earth or Water)

Some missions are not skippable, typically the final mission for each rank.

WOWEE! I am so happy to get some replies - ALL are helpful - I also realize that I did not do so good about telling about me, so to catch you up - here's some basic stats -- Female Hume WAR 16, MNK 5 - On the last quest (or mission - I always get them mixed up) for Rank 3 (the Dragon fight - and actually have done first half of it (Bastok piece) and gone to San D, but came home to Windy cuz I knew we'd never take the dragon at 16 or with just the two of us. I live in sin with a 16 RDM, 5 BLM (Nivlem) - but someday if we have enough gil and every best weapon and armor we dreamt of, we might get married ;-)

Okay - So update now (linked to original q #'s)

1. OK - So only can do the ones of my home land (Windy btw) - got it. Sidebar - I am capped on rank points - guards won't accept any more gems - flat out just have to do the dang mission (or quest)... at least I assume - but I'm pretty sure (and all recommends I've seen say same) that I will want a sub job and at least level 18 before I try to assemble PT for dragon.

2. OK - got a lot more fishing to do... I find it fun and peaceful... Curious to know what are thoughts on bait - my son (loves his own opinion, but I am higher level than him! :P) says get a "lure" - do others find this better than one of the baits suited to what you're hunting? i.e., is it more effective, last longer, ?? to use a lure versus any of the baits (i've had SOME luck with baits - caught a few things and a rusty bucket that my Moog loved).

3. OK - got that one - will keep socking them away.

4. OK - got it - will keep spending time on my baby MNK - she's pretty tough actually, and I'm really looking forward to bringing the skills together... :D <evil blood thirsty grin> I want to be a tank... the best tank out there - no fancy job - just an AWESOME WAR/MNK - well.. okay MAYBE someday I'll see about an advanced job - but for now ... Just wanna be a great tank.

5. OK see above.
==============
Friday/Weekend goal: Get SJ items and level 18 then head to Bubu Penn or Dunes and get ready for a dragon fight!!!

< I hope! I hope! I hope!!! >
==============

New Q's that came back while I was acting like I had a real job (brief lapse :p - but Gawd I want to go home and get on NOW!!!):

6. The food notes are VERY good - I have eaten some things before, but only notice that I have the hamburger displayed and not much difference otherwise? So haven't really eaten much else (other than antidotes (dang Crawlers love to poison me!)) - Also there was a mention of eating fish - I assume if I catch a fish (being the cheapest approach to acquiring them) that I still would have to COOK it to use it, right? or can I just use it raw... Tunie likes sushi?? :D

7. On Macros - I TOTALLY need to take a few minutes before I wander out, and get this set up properly - particularly I want one for Voke and Berserk (at this point), and for MNK Boost - does anyone know whether macros apply across all jobs, or if they can drift with the job??
>> I think I saw here somewhere some Macro help, so will wait till I poke some more before asking for help there - but if you're feeling inspired and want to add, I'll appreciate for sure!

8. Skillchain - now this is where my totally ignorance really shines... ;-) ... I have not a clue what this is - although I've seen it happen during battles I've participated in, I don't know how or why... <snicker> eyes drifted left as I was typing and what do you suppose I saw?! help on Skill Chains big as day... will wander there.

Continued thanks for all of you and your tolerance -- I'm just counting minutes till I'm online!!!

>> in case it's easier (and Lord I hope I don't end up on 8,000 spam lists), I'm on Yahoo IM as crewgal2000 and email webenutz@pacbell.net

I guess I'll chime in :)

Rank
For now, just do your hometown missions. so you know, most people don't go past rank-5 till they're getting up around lvl 60 or so. I got Rank-5 at lvl30 with a lot of help from higher-level friends. Also of note, missions comprise the meat of the plotline of this game. That being said, the high level JP players tend to take each city to rank 10, and do the Zilart missions :)

Fame
Check the link in my sig, read, enjoy.

Macros
Very handy, specially for us casters :) You'll learn how to make some nice ones, but for now your basic job abilities are all you'll need. It's a bad idea to macro your 2-hr on the same set of macros as your main, I put mine on the set below my main set. If you need help with a command, like say /magic, the wonderful, most powerful command in the game is /?. /? will give you a list of all avail commands. /? /magic will tell you how to use the /magic command :)

Skillchain
Most powerful thing in the game. First you'll need to find a skillchain chart and learn to read it. I believe there's a few linked on this site, there's also an online calculator out there, I have a link for it in my link thread in my journal. After you've found a chain you can use comes the hard part, timing. Genearl rule of thumb if you're the second in the chain is to count to 3, then hit your macro. Don't forget your nukers, they can burst off your chain with the right element and the right timing. White mages can burst Banish off of Fusion, don't forget about them! Skillchains can be fun for everyone.

Mithra can eat raw fish, usualy only gives a little DEX bonus.

For damage dealers there is only one food, Meat Mithkabobs(or Chiefkabobs, the +1 version) Gives STR and Attack bonuses, wich is what a damagedealers wants.

For tankers, there is Boiled Crab(and the +1, Steamed Crab i think) gives VIT and DEF bonus, and then there is Fish Mithkabobs(+1 being Chiefkabob ^^) that doesent give as much VIT as the Crab, but gives more DEF

TO ceck what other food does, go to Equipment > By Slot > Food to the left

You have got 10 Palletes with 20 macros in each(10 for ALT, 10 for CTRL) and these are saved, so you dont have to create new ones everytime you change job

When you create macros, you put /ja (For Job abilities), /ws (For weaponskills), then there is /pet (Pet commands), /nin(Ninjutsu), /ma (Magic), /equip (to equip equipment^^) etc

Eq.
/ja "Provoke" <t> : Will provoke your target, changing to <bt> will provoke the target that has a red name.

/ja "Boost" <me> : Will use the MNK ability Boost

/ja "Berserk" <me> : Will use the WAR ability Berserk

Skillchains happens when you chain with Weaponskills, it opens up for mages to magicburst, spells will do more damage.

To do the Skillchain Fusion, with low level Weaponskills it should look something like this in the chatlog:

[Partychat]Player One: Using {Weaponskill} {Burning Blade} <scall3> <- Helpfull for other members to know when you use your weaponskill so they know when to do theirs, you can put this in the same macro as your weaponskill.
"Player One readies Burning Blade!"
(Then Player Two waits a few seconds, not to long or it will fail)
[Partychat] I am teh s0p4r1337! i kick y0r Bu77! <- i am afraid you will see this someday.
Player Two readies Combo (Hopefully ^^;, now is the time for mages to start casting their spells to MB, in Fusion, you can MB with Fire and Light, being Banish usualy at low levels. Or maybe you want to MB with dia for 2 damage? ^^)
Blackmage starts casting Fire
Redmage starts casting Fire
Whitemage starts casting Banish
Skillchain Fusion! <- this is what you want
The Crab of your choice takes some damage!
Blackmage casts Fire
Magicburst! The crab takes damage!
Redmage cast Fire
Magicburst! The crab takes damage!
Whitemage cast Banish
Magicburst! The crab doesent take any damage, because the WHM got gimped Divine levels :D
Someone defeated the Crab

I hope that was readable ^^
To look up skillchains, you can find charts a little here and there and print it out.

Okay... in case you care, I did NOT get lvl 18... but I acquired (and lost) enough xp to have gotten it twice... I died more times this weekend (Saturday mostly) than I have to date playing the game!

BUT... I DID get the SJ items, and am hangin on to lvl 17 by my fingernails!!!

SJ items are attributed 100% to EXCELLENT help (you know who you are - THANK YOU!!) - many deaths however, I can only attribute to switching to a great axe...

Whoever said a WAR "must" use a gaxe was obviously never in a small party, nor less than level 30... I can absolutely see that it does more damage than my sword (got it to level 32 before finally giving up (moth axe) and reverting to my Bee Spatha.

I will not go back to Moth Axe unless/until I get some sort of "HASTE" (speed) ability and/or I'm in a party with 3 or more other damage dealers.

I also notice that my attack drops 20+ points when wearing the axe versus my spatha (68 with Spatha; 46 with Moth Axe) ...

Of course there will be many who say I'm all wrong or whatever, but those are my observations... My RDM party mate just couldn't keep me alive to use the darn axe - not his fault - as he was expected to help deal damage also...

Anyway, just had a twisted need to share - like you were all waiting on pins and needles to hear if I made it... I did come away with more new friends, a pair of pretty descent hunting grounds (xp-wise) for my little PT (me WAR 17 and Niv RDM 17) - Bubu Penninsula between Tahrongi Canyon and the outpost, and Shakrami maze just inside the entry - avoid the bats tho - they're evil!!!

Adventure on!!!

In response to your great axe comments: Yes, you can use sword and board to level you war. Yes, there is a MUCH longer delay between swings with a great axe. Your attack number is very strongly influenced by the skill you have with the particular weapon you have equipped.

My advice? Go level up your great axe skill. Know those juicy Orcs in La Theine? They're there for a reason. Go slaughter them. Raise your great axe skill. Trust me when I say you will have an easier time of it with a great axe than you will with a sword and shield. If you absolutely can't stand not having a sword and shield, I would suggest keeping both Sword and Great Axe skills capped. Once you get them both to your current level cap, just switch between them a bit after you level. Eventually, parties will want you to use a great axe.

I'll post more later, I'm late for class.

I switched from sword to Gaxe at level 16war to, to cap it i went berserk ont he crabs in latheine. you wont hit for much, and thus you can swing more times at them^^

Also, at 20 you can buy Neckchopper(30k) that has +5 accuracy wich helps to cap your gaxeskill.

On the axe - whole reason I bought one was for the strong recommends -- and I'm SOLD no doubt! But for small PT (2-3 max) and no WHM (using only RDMs), I just get my butt kicked by the delay...

Funny you should mention those dang Orcs in La Th... they killed me COUNTLESS times ;-) One time (just prior to switching back to sword (and mind you I was at level 32 with it by then)) I was killed by a mob of them (15-20) - I had set out (just on a whim as I was leaving the area) to kill one (blood lust) and it was "too weak to be worthwhile" ... next then I knew there were 15-20 ... ALL too weak - but they killed me in a blink soon as my RDM ran out of magic and I sent him away so he wouldn't die too ...

I didn't toss the Moth Axe - but think I will sell the regular axe - buy a great sword and keep working them both -- sword was capped, but now that I got lvl 17, it's skilling up again - and interestingly (while we're here) - all of a sudden last night, it was like skill-up nirvana!!! I mean EVERYTHING was kicking up for the littlest fart of a try at it... G Axe, Parry, Evasion, Sword, Shield - whatever I used and stuff I didn't even know I was using... It was very nice - ended the night tho with nothing capped...

... oh, so where was I? I was saying I think I will sell regular axe - buy me a great sword, and then just go hunt some too weaks / easy preys and level the both of them up -- my regular sword is currently at lvl 48 and I carry Aspis shield - I don't care much for the shield, but it seems to help at times - I'd be just as happy to weild sword in one hand and axe in another (that blood lust thing again) -- dropping the shield does not seem to effect my defense much at all, so sticken ok with my current armor kit, as it seems to do well - with one little protect, I am up to almost 90 (no shield - just armor and jewelry) - so I figure I'm safe on that front...

Is there such a thing as "haste" - i.e., something to help lessen the delay of the gaxe?? Or it's just gonna be a slow weapon and I have to deal with it?

You won't get access to Haste till lvl 38 I think.

If you want to be a dual-wielding war/nin, that would be pretty sweet, but while you level gsword and gaxe and sword, keep in mind that you'll either have to dual-wield swords or axes. You may have to start levelling your axe skill. Easiest way to do that is with a low level job that you have that can use axes.

For instance, beastmaster, after it's unlocked. It's a good way to level up your axe skill. But this is all in the future, you'll see how things are different as you progress. Keep at it, but most importantly, don't get caught up in "the race to 75" you'll only get burnt out. Take some time to go see the world or level up a craft skill.

I thought I would just throw in a link that may be helpful towards learning Skillchains. I know quite a few people use this chart, but I'm not sure if there are other comparable ones. http://www.adennak.com/renkei.html - Aden's Renkei (Skillchain)Chart. I printed out 2 copies, and highlighted the Skills that I have for each of my jobs (THF 25 / WAR 15).
I know that some people know the common Skillchains, but I don't think I'll ever be able to remember that much, so I always just keep this handy. Each time I get in a PT, first off I determine if we are going to be doing an SC's or not (Being a THF for my main, if I'm using a sword I can actually do more damage more frequently with Sneak Attack + Fast Blade... oops... little off topic). If we decide that we are using SC's, it's a simple matter to ask what Weapon Skills everyone else has, and to decide which ones to use.

For macro's using your weapon skills, I've got a few suggestions (I didn't read all the replies, so forgive me if I duplicate post)

/p Using {Burning Blade} in 3 <callx>
* /p - party chat mode
* <blah...> Using Auto Translate - Makes it a little more visible
* in 3 - a few seconds to get ready
* <callx> - As far as I know, x can be 1-20, it does a whistle-like call and vibrates the controller. There is a way to do it without vibration, but I can't remember it

/wait 3
* Nice and simple, waits 3 seconds (Up to 60 max I think)

/ws "Burning Blade" <t>
* /ws = Use Weapon Skill
* "Burning Blade" - Must be correctly capitalized and in quatation marks
* <t> = Use previous command in currently selected target

Maybe you already know this, maybe not, but it took me awhile to figure it out when I started as I did not know about this site, so I thought I would attempt to help. Some other useful WAR macro's:

/p Provoking <t>
/wait 1
/ja "Provoke" <t>
/wait 30
/p {Provoke} is {Ready!} <t>
* The last line you have a couple different options
/echo {Provoke} is {Ready!} <t> - Cut down on others chatlog clutter, only you will see teh message.
/recast "Provoke" - Again, only you will see this (I think)

Well, I can't really remember many others at the moment... hope I was helpful to someone in someway...

EDIT: A couple typo's, mixed up my main/sub job levels

You don't need the /wait 1.

/p (Provoke) >> <t> TP:[<tp>]
/ja "Provoke" <t>
/wait 15
/p (Provoke) in 15 seconds! TP:[<tp>]
/wait 15
/p (Provoke) (Ready!)

I try to use autotranslated words wherever possible. Also, the party messages, some people like them, some don't. I like them. When I'm levelling my WHM I love them, let's me know when I can throw out a Cure III if needed. Some people don't. Whatever works for you. You can change all the /p to /echo or /tell <me>.
